You do note that you are including entire wars in comparisons with this single campaign, do you not? Additionally, you aren't normalizing for the differences in population and technologies in many cases.
Also, the fact that others have done worse, does not excuse the behavior of someone who committed less worse atrocities.
good looking shirt.
also proves five million people should not start war with 20 million people.
Burning Atlanta to the ground on his way out. Now he’s burning in Hell for eternity. :-)
The Colonists did. The British threatened to seize their arms, so the Colonists fired upon them.
Had George not sent that force to molest them, there would have been no occasion for them to fire upon his forces.
Lincoln sent the warships to attack the Confederates surrounding Sumter. Lincoln fired the first shot with those orders for that fleet to attack.
Lincoln shot first. He ordered a fleet of warships to attack the confederates before the confederates had even lit off a single round.
But if you want to be utterly picky about it, Union soldiers fired the first shots at Fort Pickens against the Florida Militia in January of 1861.
It was one man that started the war. It was Abraham Lincoln. He started the war when he sent warships to Charleston with orders to ATTACK the confederates.
Lincoln started the war, and he did so deliberately. All but one of his cabinet told him this action would start the war, and they were absolutely right.
I believe it was Sherman who was talking to his friend, a Confederate general, before the war, telling them not to start it, because a farming nation cannot defeat an industrial nation.
ordering a U.S. Ship anywhere is not “firing a shot.” Shooting 20 pound cannon balls into a Federal Fort, is.
Two naval vessels, one Revenue Cutter and two rented commercial ships hardly constitutes a “fleet”. Davis signed letters of Marque on the same day he fired on Fort Sumter.
Both clear and deliberate acts of war
Most of those farms and plantations your hero burned, raped and pillaged his way through were being maintained by women and children. There were no fighting men around. It doesn’t take much bravery to whip a bunch of women, dig up their silver tea service, steal all their food and burn their house down then leave them to starve. That’s the reality of what happened. Thanks for reminding why the POS is burning in Hell. :-)
Because they were surrounding Sumter, after multiple federal installations had already been seized. Per the Constitution such military installations are property of the United States in perpetuity. There was absolutely no obligation to hand them over to southern states in light of secession, as I've seen argued. Regardless of the constitutional issues surrounding secession, the seizure of US military posts constituted an act of war.
Yeah. Sherman was Hitler. Uh huh.
It was probably pretty foolish for those 5 million to declare war on the 20 million to begin with, don’t you think?
Sherman wasn’t Hitler. He was an equal opportunity butcher. :-)
Simply no
Hardly.
I've read Grant's excellent memoires and have Sherman's on the shelf. I really need to get around to reading them.
The die was cast by the rebels before Lincoln assumed office. To claim some sort of conspiracy to fleece the southern states is the height of folly.
I freaking love that shirt.
Is this the Quote: “The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.”
Sherman made this comment to Professor David F. Boyd at the Louisiana State Seminary on the 24th of Dec 1860.
I call Godwin’s Law. You lose.
