Since the Brits can't have guns might as well go medieval. Start wearing chain mail vests underneath clothing. Its light enough and not overly heavy even though it seems to be used by SCA and Medieval larpers.
Make sure its RIVETED STAINLESS STEEL not that cheap butted stuff. It's not a total solution but better than nothing and does stop most knife thrusts and virtually all slashes. It raises the survivability quotient.
No good against trucks,bombs or guns of course.
