Thank you, and the same to you!
We (3rd Bn, 26th Marines, pulled a joint op with Americal on Batangan Peninsula in Jan 1969. Were you there?
"Bold Mariner", IIRC
Semper Fi!
I sure was. We were ferried there (1/1 Armored Cavalry) aboard USS Ogden (LPD 5). I’d bet we even saw you guys on the beach when we came ashore.
Don’t know if you remember “68-69TonkinGulfYachtClub” (RIP).
He was on a destroyer off Batangan that provided fire support. It was he that told me “Operation Bold Mariner”!
He was a great guy.
Wouldn’t advise a hit from sonar either.
Yes, I remember him on FR.
The first day of the operation we had the USS New Jersey providing fire support. 'Danger Close' was one kilometer! Later we had a cruiser with 8" guns, plus the destroyers with 5" guns.
Still got real nasty inland.
I went back there in 2000 with my daughter. In fact, we went all over I Corps. I’d always thought it was a beautiful country. A lot more so without having to worry about being shot at. Though still wise to stay on well beaten paths.
