The guy who now runs Fox is a wealthy, backwards, snowflake who makes business decisions on whether the NYT’s targets his family assets.

How well is that going to work?

I noticed that threads started at certain times of the day get missed and while I vaguely remember the show (being close to you in age) I don’t know if a majority of Freepers would respond to something that is reasonable as opposed to “The Five” being on at 9 being debatable.

For those who would like to watch a few programs...

Discussed here on FR about the show being available on Amazon Prime in 2012:

“I’m a 19 year Freeper, so maybe at age 65 I am over the hill. If a show like “The Five”
can generate so much discussion, and a show like Firing Line none at all, it is a minuscule
indicator of the coarsening of the culture, even among those I would think would not be susceptible.”

Yes, The Five is fluff and banal and, yes, Firing Line was weighty and intellectual. And, yes, the audience is much different today.

who in all likelihood did nothing more than express interest in women

In a neo-Victorian society such as we have today, when wishing a woman, “Good morning,” is sexual assault, what you suggest O’Reilly might have done is no exoneration. The object of the male’s attention gets to decide whether he is criminally liable or not. SNL did some great sketches on this.

Every once in a while I’ll post an article and start a thread that doesn’t get many responses. But I don’t act like a cry baby about it and scold fellow Freepers.

In deference to your august age, I will be gentle.

Carlson's show is the best of its kind - I try to watch it every night.
But it is not at all the same format as Firing Line.

Tucker typically has half dozen guests, generally culled from events of immediate
interest. His show very much is a recap on world events as they are happening.

Buckley did no such thing. He chose guests well in advance, based upon their lasting
impact on the culture in some manner.

The tone he adopted was conversational and expansive, as one would adopt over dinner.
Despite diametric opposition of viewpoints in many cases, Buckley granted his guest the
dignity of hearing their views straight through, and gave the impression that he placed
value on this discussion, and on the person of the other.

Firing Line built upon the impression that there existed a "jetstream" of ideas that
hovered above daily discourse, and that to engage in them was a worthy and
enlightening enterprise.

Today's shows are strictly news shows, lacking any expansive qualities,
and incapable of inculcating a love of dialogue for its own sake.

Our loss.

Bemoaning, yes; cry-babying, no.

Nothing I post ever generates much interest, so I am accustomed to silence following my none-to-frequent posts.

Even without my post on Firing Line, I would still have the same observation: great interest on FR in "The Five" is disappointing.

No tears - honest.

Thanks for the links!

Another reason Firing Line was important is that we have them now
as excellent and informative windows on our recent past.

Perino is subbing right now for the deposed O’Reilly. Her news delivery is so wooden one might think she is actually a puppet or a robot. She has no, nada, personality as a talk show anchor.

No, THE FIVE isn't as bad as the other poster said....IT'S FAAAAAAAAAAAAR WORSE !

And frankly, with the posts you've made to this and other such threads, one wonders just WHY you are on FR; you are a "squish", at best.

No, they tried giving him a show, then a recurring slot on the Five that was his own, and it doesn’t work. He’s not as funny as he thinks he is.

Likely. And then Fox will scramble.

Caning O’Reilly was a dangerously stupid idea.

Maybe they need a one-on-one debate show, like the old “Hannity and Colmes”.

Pretty much right on. Perino with her little Bushbotism killed any interest I had in the Five. Guttfeld used to have moments, but like so many, he started to think he was profoundly funny. I actually felt sorry for Juan Williams once when Greggie took a very personal dig at him. Beckel is a drunken joke. Bolling’s philosophy is ok, but he just is boring to me.

Kim is probably the best of the group.

As a teenager I watched Firing Line on my local PBS station. I also watched the Buckley/Gore debates during the Chicago Convention on ABC.

Going forward I'd watch The The McLaughlin Group and Cross Fire

And occasionally I watch The Five . Don't judge me. Just accept that I like opinion shows.

Shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations

Italian -“dalle stalle alle stelle alle stalle” (“from stalls to stars to stalls”)

Spanish “quien no lo tiene, lo hance; y quien lo tiene, lo deshance” (“who doesn’t have it, does it, and who has it, misuses it”).

Perino is physically attractive woman with a totally uninteresting personality and political vision and analytical skills that are bested by even mediocre high school debaters. She even believed passionately that the “Arab Spring” was a great thing instead of the bloody horror it was designed to become and became. I turn the former BOR show off whenever I see that nitwit trying to run it.

Please don’t complain about Jasper—he’s the only worthwhile or interesting thing about Perino.

The 5 is weak anyway. Bolibg was the only solid I’ve. Gutfiekd is a self-declared joke, Parino is intellectually weak (remember Jeopardy), Watters is a comedian. Beckle and Williams are empty suits. This is going to be a disaster for them. They should have brought Cavuto over.
