A moon base would be really expensive, as would trans-shipment between the earth and the moon. I doubt the returns could ever pay for the investment.
With a lot more imagination, a moon base might payoff in the construction of deep space vessels. That is some serious dreaming; for, any large scale operation like that would be really expensive. Sadly, many people don't think that going to the moon the first time had payoff, even though it was a bonanza.

There are simple formulas for acceleration, or acceleration due to gravity. The velocity you can reach (v) is dependent on the acceleration due to gravity (a) over a certain distance (d). Mathematically, v2=2ad. If the velocity is always the same, it cancels out and you have d=1/2a.
