Part of the problem is that our congressmen become lobbyist for the military manufacturing establishment and the services end up with stuff they don’t want and need, at a price 10x what it should cost.

Actually, it does matter. The spankingly new USS Arizona was not sent to Europe during WWI, mostly for the lack of readily available fuel oil in Britain at the time.
Not so with the older, coal-fired BBs.
Yep. I wondered who else was going to catch that. Pressurized steam, eight boilers, four shafts, and if you’re smoking like that somebody’s going to get reamed. They love it when you blow stacks in port, too...
Would hate to have to be the guys cleaning the fire sides when the boilers have reached their steaming hours. This is of course if the Ruskies care about such things.
