Venice California has been ruined too, it used to be a Latino ghetto and now it’s full of yuppies. I’m surprised the NY Times isn’t writing about that, too. There is a reason I don’t read that paper.

Is it idyllic or dirty?

Depends on the tide and the winds.

Tourists suck, we’re not happy.

US airbase closes, our local economy is ruined, we’re not happy.

Can’t win. Too many visitors, sucks. Visitors stop coming altogether, sucks.

People can find anoter place. Surprised venice hasn’t been marked as being done to death already.

“We’ll always have Las Vegas!”
Amen to that.

==================================

Yep, good ole Las Vegas...or should I say "Lost Wages."

Prostitution is legal there, OUTSIDE the city limits. One can plainly see the stream of Japanese-filled limos heading out the the "ranches." WHAT A FEATHER in Nevada's cap.

What has happened is Germany: Prostitution was made legal, with the thinking, "Well, they're going to do it anyway so let's TAX it." So, the pimps and prostitutes get "social security" benefits for their "work."

What has happened is that prostitution has GREATLY increased in Germany, since it's a legal "job." Girls and young women can now think: "Oh boy, I can be a prostitute for a living. Isn't that swell?"

Wouldn't YOU want your wife, sister, mother, any female (or male) relative to be a prostitute? There she is, MY little baby girl, lying on a bed, buck naked, with her legs up in the air, apart, at the mercy of a total stranger. Isn't that WONderful?

AT FIRST, the young women probably do operate with a "party" mentality, since they are, by their age, young and stupid.
THEN reality sets in and it's not so wonderful. Mr. Pimp then beats them and, if he's REALLY nice, gives them drugs to make the continual onslaught of sex, less dreadful.

Imagine, five "hook-ups" a night, 35 per week, 150 per month, 1800+ per year. That would be 18,000 in a mere ten years...and she would still be "young."
36,000 in twenty years...HOW lovely!

Side note: Making a behavior LEGAL doesn't make it right or holy. One only has to imagine what Jesus would say.
Germany is SUPPOSED to be a Christian country.
Nevada is SUPPOSED to be part of Christian America.

In the nasty ole middle east prostitution is ILLEGAL and wrong.
So is abortion.

Viva Las Vegas....yeah, right.

Wait, I thought people had a right to go anywhere they pleased. Or is that only for mexicans and moslems?

And that's EXACTLY what's at issue - the unwashed masses having access to locations that the elite "own".

This guy doesn't want anything to change, except create new businesses, manufacturing (how would that work out), keep people, especially the young, from moving away and stop tourist ships from coming near.

Bankrupt & impoverish the city and its people, keeping it from developing real opportunities for the purpose of his pleasure.

check out the what this fellow's occupation is.

The Venetian blinds and their seeing-eye dogs take up a lot of room.

I ASSUME that their seeing-eye dogs would steer them away from their inevitable dog poop. One would HOPE.

Dear Venice Chamber of Commerce;

My sister recently visited your beautiful city, and was astounded by the History, Architecture, and friendly Hospitality offered by your citizens. She and her young daughter felt very safe traveling in the water-taxis, and came back with hundreds of photos of your churches, museums, the canals, and neighborhoods. She brought back some terrific examples of Murano Glass, and her trip will be remembered for years to come.

One of the things that impressed her the most was how much you have done to clean up the canals, shore up many of the ancient buildings, and provide your tourists with wonderful Guides and Docents in all of the historical places.

It has come to my attention that there is a left-wing, elitist publication in a foreign country that is attempting to sabotage and disrupt your one and only industry, and destroy you as a city. Perhaps it would be beneficial for you to sue the New York Times and the author of the article in question for slander resulting in the possible loss of the one industry of an entire community.

Just a thought!

Sincerely,
Me

(whaddaya think?) LOL

The place survived as a tourist attraction for Europe's elite until cheap travel and rising incomes opened it up to the masses. If no tourism there is no Venice.

The bold part is the heart of the problem as far as the NYT is concerned. Who wants ugly Americans mucking up the view?

We should send them a crack team of experts in city governance from Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland.

They would solve all these pesty problems associated with too much success.
