Ugh.

That sounds like my mother being browbeaten into getting expensive oil changes at the dealership because “Jiffy Lube oil will void your warranty!!”

I had to shake my head in disbelief. I know I know, Chevy can’t be blamed for the misbehavior of one shop. Still pisses me off, though.

I use Chrome, but my laptop has a solid state drive. I can run for at least 6 hours on battery.

Personally, I began switching to Linux around 1997 or so.

By then, I was fairly certain that MoonBase Alpha and the Eagle transports were not going to appear even though getting to Space in 1999 was not that far away calender-wise. :(

(Obscure SciFi reference for some of us oldsters to comment about, in case you were wondering :) _ )

Wonder if the Microbros are ramping up for a monthly rental fee for Edge next year?

Not liking Corrina - it’s a memory hog and locks up my system. Win 10 UI seems to take more clicks to do so simple things. Start\run is a mess now.....where did calc go? Basic things....make them easy, Redmond.

Chrome starts more processes than I have ever seen a product do. If you run task mgr, it’s loaded with chrome processes!

Edge since a few testing downloads back does have Adblock.

Thank you - will have to kick the tires again when it goes production.

Microsoft wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Whey do they want me to do this? They are not nice people. I will stay with Windows 7 and also browse with Firefox.

“The solution, according to the notification, is to use Microsoft Edge”

Nope. The solution is to install every ad blocker known to mankind and set Flash for manual activation only.

Yup, I’m definitely old enough to remember that stuff. Major SciFi fan here. Lifelong.

I started playing with Linux on a 5 1/4” floppy and a 386SX back in about ‘92. DL’d it off some newsgroup or BBS. (remember those? {grin}) I ran a computer sales and repair shop then, so I got a “used” SX to try this newfangled operating system on. Couldn’t spare a REAL 386 to play with.

Was fun hearing (reading online) about Linus doing his development of this new Minix experiment. ‘Course that was over 300 baud modem dialups for a while until we got the 4800 and then the 9600 baud ones. Wow! Such blazing speed. Wish I could remember how long it took me to download the linux files onto that floppy disk.

Such fun times.

Never did like Chrome. Firefox was always second due to its memory demands and Opera was always first...

Now I’m worried that I may have to settle for second-best.

Microsoft wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Whey do they want me to do this?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long story. Some of it is filled with paranoia and doubt, depending on who you get it from. I’ll try to summarize.
Microsoft saw phones and tablets overtaking desktop computers at some point, and wanted to get in on it before completely missing the bus.
Their original codebase and interface was written with only desktops in mind. They wanted to make an operating system (OS) that could work with phones and tablets.
This presented a problem with their developers - the people who wrote Windows programs. It threatened to split developers into two different camps: the desktop camp and the mobile (phone & tablet) camp.
Microsoft decided to try and keep the developers in one camp, so they could essentially write one program and it would work on everything: desktops, tablets, and phones.
Microsoft came out with Windows 8 to do just that. The bad thing is, when they changed the interface to be more friendly to phones and tablets, they changed the desktop interface too much for Windows users, almost like they didn’t care about them anymore.
Windows 10 is an attempt to get the desktop interface back to usable for the 20+ year Windows customer, while keeping the other stuff that made it friendly to mobile computing.
Why do they want people to upgrade Windows 7 and 8 free to 10? That would mean less work for Microsoft. Instead of having to update two or three different operating systems, they could just update one and be done with it. That would mean abandoning 7 and 8, though.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will stay with Windows 7 and also browse with Firefox.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Staying with 7 has been the standard response from every company I’ve worked for. None of them want 10.
Yes, Firefox requires a 16gb machine no doubt. Open 10-12 windows and Firefox goes to 7gb in a heartbeat.
Once you go to 16gb it works like a champ.
