All a new state would need is a few seaports.I think north of san Francisco ,north of san Diego and north of santa Barbara would do it. The new state would look like a backward capital E. It would have the water and the farms,the major old california cities would keep the restaurants,coffee shops,movie industry, etc. As backward E got stronger, all of the small satellite cities would join up.
