I was born in Doddridge County, WV in June of 1950. There was a flood about a week later that killed 29 people. Our house (that I was born in) sat right beside Rock Run creek, 3 or 4 miles from West Union. The water never made it into the house. We were in the car getting ready to head for high ground when it stopped rising. My Dad was checking it about every 5 minutes with a flashlight. I think this was around June 25, 1950.

Can't remember the names but there was a family, (mother, daughter and son) that were trapped on the side of their house when it rolled over and was taken down stream. The son could swim but stayed with his mom and sister. The house broke apart and the son managed to grab a cable from a bridge that had washed away. He held on all night and was rescued the next morning and found out his family had perished. Most of the fatalities happened a few miles east of us including 22 in the small town of Smithburg. Of course I don't remember any of this directly but I heard these stories many times growing up.
