Yes, knocking out the front runner in both the D and R primary and in the final in both Presidential and in lesser races is a frequent topic and always has been.
After Newt won SC, there was a very focused coordination of the media and other candidate organizations to knock out Newt.
When Reagan was leading Conally and others in 1980 Connally and others spent massive amounts of money to knock out Reagan. Sometimes the effort succeeds. Sometime it fails.

I watch TV at the health club. All the channels were breaking in with news of Hillary’s win. Even interrupted the golf game for it.
