Miller’s stuff has held up a lot better than some of the more overt agitprop from the era like Clifford Odets. I saw a production of ‘Awake and Sing’ and it’s quite dreary. A big influence on Miller I think.
I saw the B’way revival of Awake and Sing with Ben Gazarra - it was good not great. But the revival of Golden Boy on B’way about 3 years ago was superb! Absolutely wonderful. I think they’re both great writers and will be revived for many years.
Do you like Lillian Hellman as a dramatist?
Yes, indeed. I saw a wonderful production of The Children’s Hour at the National Theater in London and that staid audience got so furious at the young Emily Watson (as the villainous child), I thought they were going to lynch her. And a matinee audience to boot. Also, of course, The Little Foxes. One of my favorites. Although the Elizabeth Taylor production was really vulgar. She was the best thing in it, though.
