Very young children cannot usually be reasoned with. They don’t see far enough into the future to understand and appreciate consequences. It makes me laugh to see the Gwyneth Paltrow types offering elaborate explanations and negotiations to babies who just need a firm “NO” and maybe a swat on the diaper.

You cannot have a rational discussion with someone in an irrational state. A smack gets their attention and makes them focus. You seem to have a good understanding of that. Kudos.
I think one of the worst spankings I ever got was from acting up in church. Dad took me by the hand, marched me down the aisle, out of the sanctuary, and out the front doors in front of the entire congregation. It hurt to sit quietly on that hard wooden pew after we came back in.
A swift kick in the ass would solve it.
