OK. If they are so smart, they couldn’t be democrats. Perhaps that is what the professor is worried about.

"... he warned that making contact with aliens capable of transmitting powerful signals to Earth over tens of thousands of light years..."

So if they're 20,000 light years away and they can travel at the speed of light to check out who sent the message they could be on our doorstep wiping us out in 40,000 years.

I say go for it! Our descendants will barely remember that we existed anyway.

Bailes said aliens who could transmit such a powerful signal that it could reach Earth over tens of thousands of light years would have to be far more advanced than us.

If the speed of light is the limit, why worry? Any consequences of our RF diarrhea are millennia away.

Much more interesting would be to receive a reply right away. That would mean (a) it's possible to beat the speed of light and (b) some aliens have figured out how.

If such a civilization were to exist, it might be tempted to blanket the universe with listening posts that watch for unusual activity and report back over the faster-than-light channel. I can see where they might find us interesting, but we would have a few break-thrus to make before becoming any sort of threat to them.

Actually I pity them, whomever they are.

"Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror. "
