Not paranoid here, either...just seen, heard and experienced enough to know the good old days are far behind, and using every day forward as teachable moments for the kiddies.

Go to the ar15.com website, Forums>Outdoors>Ham Radios. You will find some people in your neck of the woods who can help you get started. It is one of the best ham radio forums on the net. Very friendly.
Easier than it used to be but again, as ad hoc as my HF activities usually are, where I am is seldom where I was a while ago.
I’m excited, I just pushed the buy button on a new FT817ND, now that digital modes have come to the Android platform it has b become more what I want it to be. It is going to be nice having a whole self contained station in a 5 lb. package. Tuesday is the day it is set to arrive.
