Same here. We were also allowed to play outside at night.
And we rode our bikes with playing cards clipped to the wheels with clothes pins so they'd buzz. They were our "motorcycles". LOL! Came home with scrapes and bruises occasionally but we survived.
Many parents - mine included - had bells on their roofs to call their kids in for supper or when it was time to go in for the night, and each had their own ring pattern.
And they pre-date the Era of Political Correctness, so if you have any in storage they make priceless gifts for any young relatives you want to have survive public school un-brainwashed.
I have a number of gems like that to pass on my granddaughter when she gets old enough - I just hope my stepson is smart enough to focus her on them.
