I understand it is annoying. So what are you advocating “we” do about it?

But maybe you think it takes a village.

The kid acts this way because the (single) mother expects “the village” to take care of her child.

There was a better time when adults were expected to step in when any child acted up and when a grown up said “don’t do that” the kid would respond “Sorry Mister (or Ma’am).”

What is it about feral, undisciplined kids that pleases you so?

Obviously the story makes you feel good. Not sure how you think the episode makes the kid a better citizen.

Behavior results in consequences?

When biological parents fail to do their job then we all have to clean up the mess.

In old times(or in old-fashioned churches)those people attending are reminded to help the newlyweds live up to the vows.

It DOES take a community to teach and shape a child.no ONE person or even both parents can do the whole job. If the community is good people the child will most likely turn out well;if not good people....

The American conservative embraces hard work AND working with others, else this nation would just be a bunch of selfish squabbling freeloaders....

Sweaty, it’s none of your business.

DManA,

I sincerely hope that in about ten years you will meet up with this little angel and his friends and you will receive an experience befitting your alleged outrage.

Don’t think he is here for conversation. More for provocation.

He seems sad and a bit lonely.

I feel sorry for him; I don’t think he has any friends.

Call the mother’s or father’s out on it. I didn’t have to because the cashier did a very good job of silently showing her disapproval.

I really don’t care what you think, but I will say that what a child does in private is none of my business. If you take that child into a public place and allow it to misbehave and bother other customers then the store should boot your sorry butt and your child’s butt out the door. Do not inflict your out of control child on me, you do not have that right. I once witnessed a food fight between two kids while their obese parents paid no attention. I complained to management and explained that I would never return. That was several years ago and I have not been back. I have never seen anything like it. Raised by uninterested wolves.

With an attitude like that, I would not doubt it.

Just hope he does not have kids.

I happen to agree with you. The man who bought 23 pies acted out to hurt the child, which made zero sense, because the issue was not the pies to start with....it was the lack of attention the boy was getting from the mother at home. The pies just gave the boy a place to divert that anger to get attention in a negative way. Evidently the man buying the pies had a similar problem with his childhood....he acted juvenile.

Schoolyards and buses are full of swearing and cuss words, and if you spank your child in public you will be arrested because some liberal will call 911. I always walked away because a fit stops if it has no audience.

In the years I taught criminal justice, the drugs and juvenile justice were most interesting, there were reasons children acted out and it wasn’t a lack of discipline but a lack of attention and love. If they cannot get positive attention then they will find a way to get negative attention.

Parenting back in our parents time was different but now the whole family can be seperated by government, and it is not worth allowing your child to be taken for a spanking in public.....other methods work too.

No you are not a fool. You observed an adult acting out just like the boy.

So you would have given the kid the F’n pie?

Maybe taking him home and making him eat 23 pies for dinner would be the way to go.

No I would not have given the boy a pie, there would have been NO PURCHASE and we would have left and gone home to deal with his swearing and his fit. He would have went to his room, and he would have stayed there until he apologized, then he could have had lunch or whatever that meal was. There would have been no TV for a week for the cuss word.

Note that I would have dealt with the child on two issues....the fit, acting out. And then with the cuss word. Those are two separate issues. I would have given him the negative attention he wanted in a way that would have a positive return. The less television he watched from then on would end some of that bad attitude....no video games, and no cell phone (of course a child that small would not have a cell phone in my house)...just covering the electronic basis.
So he had better start to like reading or drawing.

More than you know...I have raised a son, I have two grandsons, and they treat me like their mother. Let me say this, a parent cannot wait to deal with the issue. However it is no one else’s business. My son was strong willed, and I remember a fit he pitched in a grocery store, and I walked away to check out....he followed. No audience, no fit.

They love their bedrooms....they have spent a lot of time there over the years. All have become homebodies....My son is a good artist...oil painting.

But since we've already demonstrated that the mother has abdicated her responsibilities, what recourse does society have to give this child a glimmer of what is acceptable?

The guy who bought the pies did us all a favor, and the fat little pig got to go (way wah wah) all the way home.

Maybe.... but he did not learn anything from that, except that when he grows up... he can continue to act out in public just like the jerk who bought the pies!

Maybe he learned that acting like a butt-head results in no pie.
