I tried to like it. Just couldn’t get into it.
Yes. Definitely “The Closer”! The first few years were excellent.
My sister and I tried to get excited by its spinoff, “Major Crimes”, but a couple weeks ago when the whiny narcissistic kid came out of the closet, we were done with it forever.
“In Plain Sight” was another one I wish had gone on a few more years.
Loved it. Stryker and that cool hair. Great outfits on the women on moonbase.
Check out the moonbase scenes and you’ll see some of the sets again on “Space 1999”.
And I LOVED watching “The Thunderbirds” as a kid.
I tried to get into 1999, and even though the special effects were arguably much better, the stories just bored me to tears. I thought I might have been for the fact that I was little more than a toddler when "UFO" and the "Space 1999" came out, but in reviewing both well into adulthood, the former has a 'espionage' element and more dynamic and believable characters than the latter.
A casual bing search brought me to this: http://ufo-themovie.com/shado/
I hope it's true.
Firefly could have been a true milestone in original, inspiring character portrayals -even if sometimes obvious "cowboy-themed" repeats- that might have generated a huge fanbase and quite a bit of interest.
Plus, what's not to like about an ex-Veteran trying to make his way in an unknown universe and make an honest (or semi-honest) living while attempting to remain free of unscrupulous governmental agencies, local LEOs, and Jack-Booted Thugs (but I repeat myself) while looking out for 'family'?
How about: Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl.
Pretty common theme, if I recall correctly. :)
Yep, that's one of the seven themes. SEE BELOW.
From the Internet:
1. Overcoming the Monster: The hero learns of a great evil and goes on a journey to destroy it. Star Wars qualifies. Braveheart. Jaws. Any movie with Nazis in it.
2. Rags to Riches: A sad-sack beginning that leads to a happily ever after. A lot of Dickens stuff fits here. Disney princess movies. Harry Potter. Most every rom-com.
3. The Quest: Everybody loves a quest where the hero goes on a journey to find something, which can be a Lost Ark (literal of figurative), a body (Stand By Me), or even something unknown and unseen, which is known in Hollywood as a MacGuffin.
4. Voyage and Return: Like The Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy goes to a weird place with weird rules but ultimately returns home better off. I suppose I like Oz alright, but Id rather give props to Back to the Future, because Im of that ilk.
5. Comedies get their own category, too. For some reason, two people cant be together, which creates all sorts of antics. They eventually figure it out, though. Again, most every rom-com ever, like When Harry Met Sally, or The Money Pit.
6. Tragedies are like riches to rags, where the villain gets it in the end. MacBeth and King Lear are classic examples.
7. Rebirth is like a tragedy but where the hero realizes his error before its too late, like in Its a Wonderful Life.
I agree. 1999 did bog down in lots of blah, blah, blah.
Reminds me later of ST: Boreager and ST: Deep Snore Nine!
Yes, I loved Shado as a Bond like thing while 1999 eventually just became Lost In Space. OH! New place to explore.
It could be #2, as in a peasant falls in love with a princess, but again that is not explicitly in the definition.
Again, it could be pasted onto #3, The Quest -whether the quest is for some object or the Damsel in question, but again it is not the primary theme.
#4, Voyage and return, as when a simple lad goes on a voyage and endures great tragedies and triumphs, ultimately to return home with the Damsel he rescued...
Comedies... again a pasting of the theme but not the point.
Tragedies... in essence, Boy Loses Girl Forever -and who wants to have that happen?
Rebirth... I suppose that would be your point, but "Rebirth" is such a loose label that it could apply to anything from a failing restaurant being re-branded and starting up again to someone's girlfriend dying (not to mention the ex- coming back to evilly haunt you forever) and then returning that I cannot realistically assign it to that.
Sorry, but I think it needs a simple category all its own.
Fine. Do that. Defy all the known tales of humanity and make up another category all by yourself.
This IS, after all,the FREE REPUBLIC!!!
Not to mention that the shabbily-done "creatures" (on either side) were not at all believable.
Plus, the special effects really lacked in technical expertise. Seeing an actor jump sideways before the special effects light beam even reached half-way to them really detracted from its believability.
And yeah -it was BORING. Special Effects (*cough*) not withstanding.
P.S: Aren’t #3 and #4 (”The Quest”, and “Voyage and Return”) pretty much the same thing? Just wondering...
You ARE allowed to "mix and match"--REALLY. It makes for a more interesting story with odd twists and turns.
You also see that SOME topics are taboo.
*Homosexual romances seem to be taboo (THANK gawd).
**Menage a trois type love scenes are taboo. (Thank gawd. Save THAT for the porno phanatics.)
***Fatsos are taboo.
****Super skinnies are taboo.
*****Ooglies are taboo, both genders.
******Old people are RARE.
Hollyweird presents the beautiful people only...and never TOO old. Children, thank gawd, are rare.
Those handsome and gorgeous people between 20 and 40 get into all of the "themes" and everyone lives happily ever after.
I like this. I remember the 1970's when the movies were dull, boring, tedious, with horrible endings. I used to pick the WORST moment for the movie to end...and dang if I wasn't right almost always.
Now, the movies are much more predictable.
========================
True story.
I went to see the Son of God, the story of the passion and death of Jesus.
The on-line times for the movie got me there LATE, so I missed the first half hour. I left at the end of the movie and went home. I was annoyed that I missed an entire half hour of the movie of Our Lord's passion and death.
So, I returned for a second show the next day...ON TIME. However, I left early because I simply COULD NOT see Jesus' crucifixion again. It made me cry.
THIS TIME, as I got to my parked car the TOW TRUCK was JUST about ready to put on the chains and take my car to the CAR POKEY!! I had parked in a TOW AWAY zone and it was past 4:00 P.M. YIKES!!! I thought I had "read" the street signs. I was obviously mistaken. One day was a Thursday and that day was a Friday. Ah me.
On top of that I had a $100.00 parking ticket.
So, anyway, my car WASN'T towed. It would have been $500.00 MORE to bail my car out of the car pokey!!!
I figured that the good Lord sent me away from the crucifixion early so that I could get my car and "merely" pay the $100.00 parking fine. He saved me from bailing my car out of the CAR POKEY for another $500.00!!!
I know some people who actually say that gay feelings are a choice (my parents for one)and I’m sorry but I thought that’s what you also meant. Then essentially we agree, one cannot choose who they have feelings for but they can choose not to act on those feelings:)
We may not agree 100% on everything — I don’t believe homosexuals are born that way, but we do both believe that homosexuals can choose not to act on their feelings.
