The Ramones were one of those bands that were in the right place at the right time. No, they could not play very well and I think the legend about them only knowing three chords is mostly true. "Blitzkrieg Bop" was their one anthem and all their other songs derived from that.
Basically "1, 2, 3, 4...and about 90 seconds of noise" describes their typical song performed on stage. That said, when they were just beginning, they were a breath of fresh air in an era of overproduced "progressive" rock.
BTW, none of them were related. They all adopted the "Ramone" surname as part of their act.
