My VW wasn’t brand new...and to tell you the truth I cant remember what Year...I bought it..
It was the 6o’s! ....Prior to My coming to my senses.. I hasten to add.
It had an oval rear window that I remember well.
69 Camaro. Bought it from my sister. Changed the oil that day which had the look and consistency of coal tar. Then as I was doing my own tune up to save money I set fire to the engine compartment using too much GumOut. I had to replace most of the wiring and some of the hoses. Very expensive first day
My first was not as grand as yours. I had a 1974 Datsun B210 ... ugly Datsun orange that faded on a weekly basis in this hot Texas sun.

A 1963 Studebaker Gran Tourismo, It was a hard top coupe, Avanti powered with the Power Shift transmission and Twin Traction and flew like a bat out of hell. I had a lot of fun with it in high school.
Yeah, I lucked out. I had a Vespa scooter that I proceeded to wipe-out on when making a left turn at an intersection (hit some loose gravel). I only ended up with some nasty raspberries, but it freaked out my Dad, and he went out and bought me the Chevy. Thanks, Dad!
Green 1936 Plymouth after WW II. It has a weakness for blown head gaskets but it took me for my first rides.
A bright yellow, 1972 AMC Gremlin with a 304-V8 and 3-speed manual. I bought it from my brother who had bought it new and made some high performance engine modifications. He ran it at a drag strip where, as I recall, it did the 1/4 mile in under 14.1 @ 100 mph. Not impressive by today’s standards but at the time it was a quick car. And being a much-maligned Gremlin, caught many people off guard.
I almost bought a 401 and 4-speed for it but never did. The AMC engine blocks were all the same size so any of them would fit right in.
I bought a wrecked 65’ Mustang that was smashed in the rear end and paid $400. I found a 66’ Mustang that was wrecked in the front end and paid $90 for it. Leonard Smith in Temple, Oklahoma, put the two good ends together and painted it for $500. I drove it for four years. So it was a 65’-66’.
57 Pontiac Star Chief. 347 4 barrel, 4 speed automatic, and the radio had a “wonder bar”.
No kidding.

In late 1964 I got a 1953 MG TD.
Next was a '59 Buick Invicta station wagon with a Super Wildcat(?) HUGE v8 and fins on the front. Whne you hit 60mph the front fins started flapping.
Next was a brand new '67 Mustang convertible with the California option. Pretty cool but only a 2bbl until I ....ummm...fixed it.
I bought, repaired and sold several vw bugs prior to actually being old enough to drive (that freaked a few people out) but the one I started driving was a 73 Chevrolet pickup. It had been garage kept but still had significant rust in spite of being 4 years old. That was on the TX gulf coast.
On Volkswagens the one piece oval rear window was on the 1953 through 1957 models. Before that it was a two piece oval going back to the Nazi KdF-Wagen. In 1958 the rear window was widened to a rectangle shape & stayed mostly the same until the last Beetle with U.S. specs which was the 1977 model. They were assembled in Mexico & Brazil for years after that but that’s stopped, too.
I was the only white guy living on "South-side" Richmond, VA who owned one at the time. Got the thumbs up from "the Brothers" in their "pro-Keds" and the "Pike dwellers" upa nd down the strip ("Petersburg Pike, aka US Rt 1, that is).
Mine was identical to this you tube video except that it had the black vinyl interior.
Bought it in Greenville, SC for $1025 in January, 1977 with 68,400 miles on it. Died in my driveway in Stamford, CT in 1990 with 205,000 on it. By that time the valve seats were gone and it was drinking 3 quarts of 20/50 every 200 miles!
It was a sweet ride for sure!
