...together with “If it’s work doing, it’s worth doing right.” (another from Dear Old Dad)
Work smart, not hard.
Right before the dot-com bust, I was doing contract programming. A friend told me he thought the bottom was about to drop out and advised me to take a full time job somewhere stable.
Maybe it was providence, or maybe just luck, but a few days later a friend and former coworker called me to tell me his company was forming a new team, and would I be interested. I took the job, which turned out to be a great thing in and of itself, and was happy I was there when the bottom fell out do the tech job market.
Stop doing that or you’ll go blind!
In life: You can hide things from a thief, but you can never trust a liar.
Eigth grade teacher wrote a message in my graduation remembrance book. “Lofty goals can be imagined but never reached if your aim is low.”
When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.

“Avoid the Brown Acid...repeat...avoid the Brown Acid”
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
From Dad, eh?
“Never argue with a man holding a loaded machine gun.”
Long story went with wit about gambling in a war zone....still, darn good advice.
Your concious and considered choices will almost always result in your intended outcome.
Your choices of abdication or not carefully considered are rarely going to end well.
Consider, choose wisely and guard closely your thoughts, that they may be guided by principle and moored by rules silent that always inform as to your path, so they guide you to your destinations.
Dad.
You catch even more with manure. ;)
Keep your feet and knees together.
Do not look directly into the sun.
If you want smart kids, marry a smart woman.
If your airplane is going to crash FLY IT UNTIL IT STOPS!
That probably saved my life and the lives of 5 passangers.
Keep your friends close, but your enemies even closer.
