I believe there is a more basic underlying problem that must be fixed first.

Once more.....I never said I did!
Basic sales. You gave him an objection to work to overcome.
A head shake, “Sorry”, and slight, defensive lifting and shaking of your hands should do it.
As I said in post #28, I don’t expect it will be. But when I know a thief already has my money, I try to get it back.

“Did you know that technically he could have had you arrested for making a threat with a gun?”
No, I didn’t... What is the offense? consider, too, he threatened me.
Mutual combat is irrelevant. If a cop saw you say that, and decided he didn’t like the cut of your jib, he would have hauled you off saying the hobo’s threat was not credible but yours was. If you didn’t like it and jump fast enough, it’s Disorderly Conduct for you in addition to the assault. There would be no concern if there was no chance charges would be filed, they don’t care. I’ve heard cops brag on FR about how they’d arrest people for “Disorderly Conduct” for the sheer fun of it, to humiliate them in public.
Society has gone to Hell, quite a long while ago.
Ah... Here it is. In Louisiana it’s called disturbing the peace.

I don’t think my defensive comment would meet the elements of offense.
But I do hear you on the corrupt state of police officers who ruin it for all law enforcement officers.
I see nothing wrong with your comment, and I’d have said the exact same thing. After making sure there weren’t any cops within earshot. If there weren’t any within eyeshot, either, I probably would have shown the bum what a 9mm Ruger looks like.
And in Louisiana you would have been within your right to do so. And if I saw you do that I would applaud you.
If anything, the drunken bum met the elements of the offense... But if I notified an NOPD officer, he probably would say “Not Our Problem, Dude.” high rates of reported crime is bad for tourism, you know.
They'll prolly start coming with this...
I’m pretty sure I’m within my right here in AZ as well. And I wouldn’t bug the Police about the incident either. Besides, how the heck is a bum going to find out where you live anyway?
But it disturbs me to hear these stories of aggressive panhandling getting worse. “No cash? I can wait for you to go the ATM.” Really?? That conversation sounds more like a robbery than panhandling.
Problem is this happened in my neighborhood. I lived in the Marigny next to the French Quarter, and I worked there, too ... so he might have fulfilled his threat to drop by. he would have received an appropriate welcome.
The area has its regular group of derelicts.
Ought to mean something.....I'd think.
Thanks, A_Freeman! I, very seriously, hear this a lot and I was/am beginning to wonder what the lexicon truly means. Always good to follow you here.
Thanks for everybody’s participation in this thread. Actually turned out to be a pretty good one.
I anybody is wondering I made it home safely from the people’s republic of kalifornistan.
I am now safely back at the ‘compound’ in the North Georgia mountains.
Kind of like "Kinetic Military Action" instead of "invading a country without Congressional approval".
