I suspect there are more posts on that thread, but the PERL script that formats the pages probably isn't capable of resolving them. That magic number is the highest integer that can be resolved using 16 bits (1111 1111 1111 1111
(2)). In programming, when you know something will be a positive integer (like post numbers in a thread), a 16-bit integer (unsigned) variable is used. I suppose John could have fixed that then by setting up a floating-point variable, but he probably didn't want to address it.
I used to trip over that feature when I did C programming (it's actually a very common mistake, it comes from underestimating the magnitude of the numbers that will get used).
