Weirder part, it was never used.
It was built and floated in 1858, purposefully sunk two days later with plans to raise it for use in 1859...
...which never happened.
It has been sitting there ever since.

Some stocks have weird looking woodgrain from that era.

Not real exciting. I ran across “The First Line” story contest and punched out a 1,540 word story in an hour and mailed it in. Top prize is only $30 but no matter.

What were they thinking?
Could be Elm if the grain looks odd.
This one is original, but is very dark and hard to tell.
The grain follows the line of the stock.
Well, it put it “in storage” for a bit.
And it was fairly common at the time.
They recovered the ships by using a hook and rope.
Some of the fleet was recovered.
So it is odd that Tortoise stayed put.
Maybe they lost track of where they had put her.
They should have just rearranged everything on the deck.

It is Russian, could have been vodka and big bossomed women they were thinking of.

The French had “devastation” in 1879.
And “redoubtable” in 1876.

A lot of Pennsylvania long rifle stocks have a weird ladder pattern to them.
But truly old stocks are usually too dark to see that.
With the two forward turrets side by side, it was a floating double entendre.
“We were all drunk that day!”
The stuff was nicely arranged on the deck but not bolted down properly.
They took it for a test drive.
Unfortunately a storm hit and rearranged things.
