The idea of a single interface for different devices is idiotic.
Windows 8 should have the Metro UI on tablets and smartphones, and the Aero UI on PCs.
They even put the Metro UI on Windows *Server*, for crying out loud.
Windows 8 is n the Windows Me and Vista camp.
Developers already offer Windows 8 shells to get rid of the interface.
win 8 is AWFUL
W8 is fustercluck. It seems that every new MS OS closes the window (no pun intended) to customizing your PC for your own preferences. Things get moved around, ostensibly to make things "easier", but it looks like they just bury them deeper and that makes them harder.
I like the idea of a virtual desktop and treat my PC as such. I start with a clean desktop (with a nice wallpaper), just the Recycle Bin on it. I then either open apps or folders (Windows Explorer, etc.) from the Start menu or the Quickstart bar, where I keep my most commonly used apps - but not too many as to make it too crowded and therefor useless).
I don't have a smart-phone (I have no use for one - just a "regular" phone for me), so I don't care that W8 looks like a cellphone. I don't even like the look of it, TBH.
I suspect I'll be moving on to the PS4 when it comes out, as I can do almost everything there that I do on this (XP) PC, and it will be much cheaper than buying a whole new PC, along with all the setup it takes (ripping out all the bloatware and installing my own apps). What I can't do on the PS4, I'll suck it up and use my wife's laptop.
Windows 8 is not that hard.
I despised it for about a day.
I’m certainly not going to purchase a 1600 dollar Mac because I think I can’t handle the new start menu. Especially when there is a fix for it.
People that exagerate to make some point in their agenda can’t be trusted
I work at a desk all day. I utterly despise touch screen typing, it slows me down big-time, and I need a good screen to see details of numbers, calculations and formulas in Excel. Touchscreen sucks for that application. I don’t even want to use a touch screen to write a paragraph as short as this. Tablets are OK for some non-work applications, but not for the work and style of computing that I use. I don’t even like laptops for largely the same reasons. I hope somebody makes a PC for the likes of me.
I am not going to debug a database application on my phone or ipad.
Idiots.
I just hadto replace a really old computer that wasn’t cutting it anymore. Stuck with Windows 8, and it’s terrible. I need to know how to disable the apps careen so it just goes to the desktop
Then it's over.
Those of you still using Windows XP keep in mind that Security Updates for it end next year as “Extended Support” ends. Be sure at the very least to use an alternative web browser if you continue to use XP after that. Consider http://www.sandboxie.com/ with it for an extra layer of security. I’d not do things like email and personal banking from an OS that cannot be maintained for security updates however.

LOL - Sales are down 14% in the worst economy since the Great Depression? There are segments of the economy that would kill for only a 14% drop in sales.
My understanding is that Microsoft is down to only a half BILLION users.
We all should be so unsuccessful.
I guess I failed to get the message on the demise of the desktop PC as we just purchased two HP 23” Touch Smart PCs in January. They replaced one 8 year old and one 6 year old Dell, both running XP.
It simply was time to replace those workhorses. For home use, we wanted large screens with a mouse and keyboard and a touch screen. We have found that Windows 8 is just fine. Plus, it is designed for touch screen use. Anyone purchasing a desktop or laptop today who does not purchase a unit with a touch screen is not being a smart shopper. Those of you who do not want to change with the times when it comes to technology will soon regret it. I am 70 years old. Yet I still realize that I cannot live in the past.
If I HAD to use a new desktop right now, it would either get Windows 7 installed, or Linux. There’s no good reason to run Win 8, IMO.
What’s “Metro?” It sounds a lot like “Vista.”
YOu have to understand the source of the negative comments.
Steven J. Vaughn-Nichols of ZDNET, is rabidly anti-Windows and anti-Microsoft, and will take any opportunity to attack all things Microsoft. He’s been attacking windows and Microsoft way before Windows 8 was even a concept, and he is a big proponent of anything to do with Linux. He’s biggest dream is to see not just Windows disappear, but the whole of Microsoft. He can’t stand that Microsoft is still so relevant and so big. To him Windows 8 was a failure before it was even release to market, and the post-PC world was a reality once tablets and smartphones started selling, and that was some 5-7 years ago.
SJVN is to Windows what Ahmadinejad is to the U.S.
