I have read the book of Solomon many, many times, as well as the others. If I had a least favorite book, that would be it. I didn't grab something out of the middle, your post stirred a memory in me that the Shulamite was white, so I reread the book this morning and there it was, ivory.

5 I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.

6 Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me:”

That’s Solomon speaking of himself. Read it in context, there’s a dialogue going on between Soilomon and the Shulamite.

I have read the book of Solomon many, many times, as well as the others....

My only recommendation to you is to read the passage more slowly and carefully at the beginning to gain better context.

"2 Let him kiss me

Solomon was not gay. Agreed?

The woman is speaking.

There is no indication of dialog or voice change through the quoted passage to verse 6:

"5 I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.

Stop here. If Solomon were speaking and calling himself black why would he refer to "the curtains of Solomon" in so detached a fashion? Why not just say "I am black as the curtains in my bedroom?" Why? Because it's the woman speaking not Solomon.

"6 Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me:"

Stop here. Solomon was royalty. Those who worked the fields were those who spent significant time in the sun, not royalty. And particularly not Solomon who was not a king who trained for war.

A king might say, "Look at me when I'm talking to you," but what king -- particularly the grandest of his time sheepishly says, "don't look at me because I'm black?"

Bottom line: the woman speaking here is black. She says so.

Song of Solomon has its place in Scripture. Don't think less of it.

Well, it didn’t take me long to realize that I should not be engaging in this kind of back and forth with you because you are most likely a Christian too and at least my part of the conversation is unseemly. I do humbly apologize to you my brother or sister, as the case may be and retract the snide things I said.

May God bless you and yours as richly as He has blessed me and mine.

No offense intended, or taken.

We're on the same side of a lot discussions here at FR, and from what I have read we share a number of studied opinions.

"Study to show thyself approved unto God...." 2Tim 2:15

As we continue to do so we become better acquainted with the Truth.

However, for the purposes of the mini-series, I did not find the skin color to be important," said Vaughn.

I stopped watching during episode 1 when the men of Sodom and Gomorrha were portrayed as thugs only out to hurt people instead of homosexual rapists.

Meh...but hey, it's a mini-series so technically anything goes! But it's unfortunate that millions of people are going to watch this and BELIEVE it's the THE bible.

I stopped watching during episode 1 when the men of Sodom and Gomorrha were portrayed as thugs only out to hurt people instead of homosexual rapists.

Then why was the man hugging his in his arms sheep for? It was there but it was in the background in the darker room where the party or whatever was happening. If you stop and think for a moment it make sense. They showed a lot going on but it was being done in the darkness. Obviously Sodom and Gomorrah were not 100% Homosexuals otherwise the problem would have resolved itself within a generation right? It seems many things were going on among the worst though was homosexuality and likely bestiality.

They do not claim it to be The Bible word for word but rather a dramatization. For what they seem to be trying to do {get people to think} they are doing OK. If you have a child and want to explain events out of The Bible and you read them the KJV passages you'll get a blank stare.

Most criticizing it are doing so because they have a fuller understanding of The Bible. The intent here seems to get people curious and thinking about The Bible and GOD. In doing so they possibly would start seeking and let GOD through The Holy Spirit lead them further.

If you had not read and studied The Bible and I first read Jesus genealogy from Matthew and then turns around and read Luke if you were following it you'd say now wait a minute. That understanding comes later and even some Christians do not realize why the two give different accounts.

This series is aimed to tell the basics to those who likely never gave The Bible a second though. In that respect in the time given them they seem to be doing fine.
