My wife and I are doing the same. I gave up my morning trip to Starbucks-an admittedly small gesture, but in principle starving the beast at every opportunity. I also can’t afford to quit my job like some of the critics here are suggesting. We are also not quitting Christmas, but we will give only gift cards to be redeemed after Christmas day to exploit the sale clearances and deprive big retailers of their “stupid christian” profits. We have stopped going out to dinner and only shop for necessities. Going Galt-light is something to feel like we can make a difference. Screw the FR critics - best of luck until the nation goes over a cliff or comes to it’s collective senses.

For christmas find a real family in need. hard working God fearing americans down on their luck. no salvation army or tree angels for me. i donate to those truly in need. let O take on the rest.
Part of my frustration and wanting to go Galt (Galt Lite) is simply to not support a system that no matter what we do just IGNORES us... Conservatives are worse than Lepers to Establishment Republicans and are Terrorist to numb minded Democrats. We fight like hell and we end up with McCain and Romney which gives obama... The Makers just have to conserve our resources and keep them away from the Takers... Stat small and grow into a more powerful force... The less money in the broken corrupt system - the less that can be taken.
Personally - I’m going to Thailand in the Spring and will live nicely ... My contributions to the Takers will be limited.

In an attempt to rid myself of feelings usually felt when a loved one dies, I have tried to recenter myself. I have never watched CNN and drek of that nature, but I have also blocked Fox. They just aren’t on my side. I am grateful that all the phone calls have stopped. MY major efforts include refinancing my balance on my house mortgage at 3% (6% now) and cutting my expenditures to the bone. I will concentrate on family and tune the world out. If and when I feel reenergized I will look around the battlefield and select my connections carefully. I changed my political registration 4 years ago to independent, Republicans do not want or need me. I have actually cut my Free Republic time down significantly. I will continue to be a monthly donor.

“Going Galt” is the extreme case of the definition of economics: the effects of incentives and disincentives. Today, the most important part of this extreme form of disincentives will be the loss of one’s capital or assets.
Prepare for HUGE inflation when/if the economy slows its decline. The difficulty is that our current governments (elected officials and their appointed judges—from city to state to federal level) have NO respect for property rights. What they see or what’s pinned down (real estate) can be taken—by force or by inflation (most likely case).
If an asset rises in value from $100K to $1 million (in tomorrow’s money) and you sell it in the market place, you are likely then to be forced to pay a tax for your “gains” you will be going backwards in real money. This is what is facing corporations and us today. Inflation is a silent confiscation of wealth.

I went Galt in 2008. By the way Atlas readers, the definition of going Galt has changed. You don’t like it, too bad. It means what WE say it means as we are the ones doing it. Going Galt now means resisting the govt by pulling back on business actvity since business activity is not rewarded in this country at this time.
We dont’ have to copy to the extremes of a fantasy novel to participate in this movement. More small businesses are joining daily.
In 2008 I had my wife retire. I shut down my land development business, sold off some real estate while keeping real estate useful for the long term. I cut my income by about 70%, and stopped most of my business
activity. I had been preparing for this for years as the coming problems were evident long before Obama.
Our new, simpler life is fantastic. We moved to a small rural town where people actually help each other. No more of this living in a big city where most are anonymous and selfish.
“Starve the beast” could also serve as a name for this movement, but the name isn’t what is important. The actions are what’s important. The govt is getting a lot less money out of me because I don’t make a high income or spend a lot of money now. I’m a losing proposition for the govt now, and I’ll stay this way until I see opportunities to use my resources for profit.
I have sold almost all stocks, keeping a few big dividend payers. I used to have three cars for two people and replace a car every few years. We drive abotu half the miles we used to drive, paying less gas tax and saving a lot of money on gas and car maintenace.
Our spending is down, our quality of life is way up. Instead of watching weirdos in the city, we watch deer in our yard, and have eagles flying overhead.
Big cities are unliveable now. In our town you don’t even put on your seatbelt unless you get on the highway to go somewhere else. We have no “rush hour” which had become an all-day affair in our former city life.
TV? Haven’t watch much besides local news and a little football in years.
Join us, small business people. The real secret to this movement is to get out of cities and move to small towns.
It still feels like America here.
My idea of going Galt is just to spend money only on absolutely necessary expenses. Spend only on food , drink water from the tap, food only of mostly red beans and rice, no movies and useless crap and especially no sports events( they give us circuses to keep us distracted). If we did that then this economy would collapse and we get rid of this marxist (it may be the only way as they will find a way for a 3rd term).Going Galt is a good idea for all of us , half of the country , who voted against this evil communist Marxist Obama . We also can save money that way, a lot of it.
I think he is saying that Obama’s and Liberal policies in general has caused him to have a decreased incentive to:
1) Save, invest, and produce for a hostile economy, and increase incentive to hoard
2) increase productive expenditure
3) increase demand for labor
4) increase wage rates
5) increase employment
6) personally spend and consume
This will have a Galt-like effect on the economy if many people start doing this.

I am emotionally removing myself from the political grid and as much from the machine as possible. I’ve deleted my hyperlinks for polical websites and talk shows. FR is next. All MSM blocked. We now live under a tyrannical dictatorship where elections are stolen in plain sight. I choose not to be emotionally or financially engaged in such a system. If/when GOP acknowledges what happened, I will then listen. Until then....I’m out.

5. Fight with Tax assessor to reduce value of home
6. Buy “off the grid” Craigslist, yard sales, farmer’s markets
7. Contribute to the Catholic Church..and pick up the subsidy in Catholic schools for kids
8. Sell stuff @ Yard Sales

I have been “living like no one else” for about 5.5 years now, so my economic footprint can’t get much smaller. However, I am mere weeks from being done with my mortgage and as a result I was starting a “spending list” on projects, major purchases, etc. That list was forecasting that I would spend about $48K over the next 2 years. Well, that list has been scrapped and minimized. I must fix my front porch to stay out of the view of the city inspectors! Other than that, I will spend nothing more.
Do any FReepers have a used Laptop for sale? MI FReepers in SEMI, anyone have a couch they want to sell?
