Putting a base there would make a lot of sense. It’s a tiny little island, so a base would not be vulnerable to land side attack as would a base on the mainland.
A grandfather of mine came from the Channel Island of Jersey to Maine in 1671, and with his brother, was later killed by indians in 1706.
Upon migration, they changed their surname from French/Spanish to English/German in spelling, as was common.
