You don’t even need a Hard drive. You can run Ubuntu Linux from a USB. I did it for a couple of hours before installing it.

That would be an awesome idea. Maybe something we can keep prying government eyes out of?

My HDD was toast and was removed and the replacement was Advanced Format and 7200 rpm, it would not be recognized by my Bios/Puppy Linux.

Didn’t stop me from running Puppy Linux live disc and get online. After the new HDD was in it, I ran Ubuntu 12.04 off the USB flashdrive for a couple of hours before installing it.

I like it

Thanks for the reply. I ended up ordering a new motherboard for my Toshiba laptop and after installing it I have the heavy thing back up and running smoothly w/250GB drive installed. I run Vista on it, sadly. I may change that in the not too distant future, probably to Windows XP, but it’s primarily a word processor and Internet machine to me. Gotten used to using the desktop again, plus I have a nice large monitor for my failing eyes.

I have been told to keep my old HDD because it might be possible to retrieve some of the stuff on it. Using one of those USB things someone linked to on this thread. That HDD had a recovery partition and it might even be possible to take Vista and put it on my new HDD (I’d learn to partition first because I like my Ubuntu 12,04 for most things)

I have only been using it for a few days but friendly Linux users have helped me out a lot.

My old HDD was a 200GB, my new one s 250GB, a Seagate Momentus or something. I have a Toshiba Satellite L-305-S5989

The S5989’s are apparently very very very rare. It was not built for graphics or speed and it has no webcam built into it. (I didn’t want one)
