5 College Degrees That Aren't Worth The Cost

I find three things wrong with your post. One is that it would take one helluva disciplined person to give himself a college education by reading in a library. Finding those literate friends, which I take is your stand-in for college professors versed in the subjects)? Well, that would be an undertaking. I cannot imagine many 18-year-olds doing that. I think you’re thinking of a much older person but even so, it’s hard to imagine. BTW, what would they be doing to support themselves while doing this? Slinging hash?

Second, if an individual chooses to take loans to acquire his college degree (and I did back in 1962-66), what gives you the right to deny this decision, particularly if he pays the loan back? And I did.

Third, and here’s your arrogance on display again, you seem to think that the “state” (which you hide behind the term “taxpayers”) needs to be economically reimbursed, as it were, for anything anyone does in the area of higher education.

All in all, you’re projecting your disappointments in higher education to society as a whole. Too bad.

You made the point about working one’s way through college. I worked an average of 25-30 hours a week as a radio announcer for nearby commercial radio stations throughout my college career. Nevertheless, I had to borrow some money to cover some of the tuition and board; I averaged loans of about $450 per semester, and came out owing very little by comparison with today’s students.

I studied hard and graduated with honors. And this was done at an academically tough college. The college routinely flunked out a quarter of its freshman class every year. Almost all of the professors held PhDs; there were no graduate students doing any of the teaching.

The county in which the college was located was a dry county, which had no effect on me. I never have drunk alcohol (saw what it did to my father, an alcoholic).

But I had a full social life. Many, many dates. Girls found me attractive.

I have no children, so I’ve not had the occasion to visit any of the current universities aside from an occasional look-see at my alma mater. As regards the latter, I was disappointed in what I learned from some of the students...typical liberal propaganda is going on there, something that did not happen when I was there. Naturally, I contribute nothing as an alumni. I don’t support liberals in any fashion.

I am thankful for having had the opportunity to get a good education. It led to a wonderful career and now I am retired with not a care in the world.

offer the degrees.

seriously. Just make them a “luxury degree.” No student loans from the government, no instate or any discounts whatsoever, no private lender bankruptcy immunity, AND prohibit those degrees from the teachng profession other than university level.

let them pay for their decisions.
