We can reasonably expect the recent usual spam in 5, 4, 3...
The Neandertal Enigma by James Shreeve in local libraries Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127] To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. |

These are the last month plus of links on Archaeologica, posting 'em here to make it simpler for posting later. I've been swamped.

Apparently the Neandertals had their own version of obamacare.

If only they had practiced a little more Neandertal-made global warming, they could have saved themselves.

Is that the Neanderthal spelling? I believe our cousins across the pond spell it that way.

I knew it. Those dam ILLEGALS again. Everywhere they invade they cause problems.
And these guys prolly didn't even have the courtesy to Vote for the RAT party in return -- literally.

Homo sapiens sapiens went through a severe bottleneck event as well.
Ours is genetically dated to 70K years ago.
I wonder if a larger sample size of homo sapiens neanderthalensis would give a similar date, and why...

IMHO these supposed bottlenecks are illusory, the result of drawing thick conclusions from thin data.
