Fedora's overall graphics seemed "rougher around the edges too.
Got the sound to work on the PC ... the speakers were defaulted to MUTE mode.
I should have checked that first - like checking to make sure the PC is plugged in when it won't power up. Oy ...

Ockham’s razor — Don’t overlook the simpler explanation for the more complex.
I used to work the helpdesk, so I should have asked you about the user interface first before assuming a module problem...

My first personal pc was a Commodore 128...I thought I was pretty "tubular" at the time.
You could try kubuntu on this....
