The Azores were a major stopover in the days before prop planes could make it across the Atlantic without refueling.

If they could make it to the Azores there's no reason they couldn't make it to America.

The “Roman” head is most interesting in the context of this topic; it was found in an American burial dating to the era of the Roman Empire.
