Here they are, in no particular order...
Ruger SR9 Springfield XD9 Taurus PT809 Sig Sauer P250
The XD9 is the only one that i have actually fired. I have held the Ruger and it felt fine in my hand.

I’m no expert but I’d personally lean towards the XD or the SR9.
That said, have you considered a Glock 17/19, Smith & Wesson M&P or one of the less expensive Rugers?
FYI we have two Browning Hi-Powers and a CZ75 (not B) for 9’s. Next on the wishlist are a S&W M&P and a FN Herstal FNX in .40 and a 1911 (maybe a TAURUS). A Kel-Tec P9 and a Taurus .22 revolver are on the list as well.

I love the FNH. The Springfield XD9 is crap in comparison.

Strangers on the internet are not what I would consider a reliable source of information about firearms. Everyone with an smidgeon of testosterone wants to be the expert.
My 2 cents:
Find a gun range here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=gun%20ranges, maybe take a class, rent and shoot a bunch of different types, and then buy the one you like the best. Just be sure to test it until you're confident that it will be reliable.
You wouldn't ask a people on the internet to help you pick out a pair of tennis shoes and buying a gun isn't much different from that.
