For years, I applied hydrogen peroxide (learned about it from Mom), and it was moderately effective at halting the development of the cold sore and causing it to retreat.

Then, one day, I was looking for the peroxide at a local Wal-mart, and so I interrupted a conversation between another customer and the pharmicist who was answering her question. They were talking about cold sore remedies!

The customer insisted that L-Lysine was the thing to use -- the 500 mg tablets -- which she directed me to take four of them at the first tingle. Then another four tablets about 8 hours later, followed by a third dose of four tablets about 8 hours after that.

It's what I've used for years now. The sore never erupts, and the tingle goes away by the third dose.

L-Lysine

stops the pain within 30 min and greatly speeds healing and disappearance of cold sores.

L-Lysine

takes the pain away in about 30 min and speeds healing greatly—can also prevent full eruption if taken quickly enough.

I hadn’t noticed that.

I think you’re right. I knew you were right on the cold issue. Had forgotten about the cold sores.

I used to use lysine, then switched to tea tree oil, now I’m a prunella fan.

Had heard of a remedy for chapped lips.

When lips start to chap, generously rub pig dung on your lips.

Don’t know how effective the dung is BUT it should sure kill the urge to lick your lips, and, as an unintended consequence, should help on that diet also.

Don’t really believe I will ever be old or desperate enough to try it though.

Works for dieting also, just spread it all over your plate before serving the food.

Decided against lysine since almost all those supplements are made in China; prefer to use the simplest stuff. Tea tree works okay, speeds up the heaing a bit, but then when I tried Prunella extract - wow!

2 to 3 days, all gone. Even keeps it from developing at all if caught in the first stages.

Plus, I like to use things I can make myself. ;-)

A friend has a lot of Prunella growing wild - it’s also called Self Heal or Heal All.

I make a lot of tincture every year using Clear Springs grain alcohol mixed equal amounts with water. Usually tincture for at least 3 months.

It’s useful for many things - in Chinese medicine it’s used for cancer (used for a couple of clients in their programs), also flu and other viral illnesses; also works topically with cat scratches, sores and cold sores. Still figuring out uses for it!

LOL. One thing for sure, don’t apply starter fluid near and open flame.

Get your starter fluid in a spray can at your auto supply.

I pick the flowering tops with a few leaves and usually dry on a clean sheet for a few days until somewhat wilted, then put in quart mason jars and top off with the half water/half Clear Springs 190 Proof grain alcohol and put the two part lid on tight. As much herb as the jar will take but sill not pop out of the alcohol.

Some states apparently don’t allow the sale of pure grain alcohol, in that case use a clear liquor like vodka, as I have heard that colored alcohols interfere with the uptake of the medicinal substances in the herbs.

I store in a cool dark place for 3 or more months, shaking when I walk by and think of it. Sometimes I might need to add a tiny bit of alcohol/water if I use fully dried herb.

When I decide to strain, I just strain through fine mesh stainless steel strainer and funnel into dark brown bottles, label and store in a dark cool place. Lasts for several years that way. I’ve experimented tincturing it for 6 months and more just for fun. It doesn’t seem any stronger.

I’ve also made half Lemon Balm and half Prunella especially for herpes, chicken pox and viral illnesses in general as Lemon Balm is also anti-viral.
I also make a tincture of lomatium root which I buy as I don’t think it grows around here. It is a chunky root and I tincture it for 6 months. Very good for flu and respiratory ailments. Native Americans used it in Nevada for the 1918 flu and had a good survival rate.

I had a 1971 AMC Gremlin that required dry gas poured directly into the carburator to start it in the middle of winter. Lots of fun, lol!
