This appears to be a case of internal locus of control/motivation vs. external locus of control/motivation. My experience has been that liberals tend by far to care more about what other people think and are doing, they follow fads and worry about appearances more than conservatives do. Funny because liberals fancy themselves as “rebels” and they so are not.
