Texas Independence Day is March 2, so this is an older reprint of a neat article penned by Bum. Now if only his boy, Wade, could be the coach he was....

I went to Italy and the tour said to wear your most comfortable shoes, so I wore my cowboy boots.

With jet lag in my eyes a small group of us sauntered over to a corner store and ordered up some cappuccino's. The old guy behind the counter, not serving us, was just sitting there smoking a cigar.

"Americano?"

"Si."

With that I lifted up my foot high enough so he could see my cowboy boot over the counter.

He took the cigar out of his mouth, smiled and said, "Ah! Texas!"

I remember after the Oilers lost the AFC Championship in 1980, Bum gave the famous “door” speech. There at the old Astrodome, in front of several thousand men, women, and kids, he said the following:

“Last year, we knocked on the door. This year, we pounded on it. Next year, we’re gonna kick the sonovabitch in!”

Gotta like Bum Phillips, even if you ain’t a Texan.

Me, too! Season tickets for years. Still hate Bud Adams...and glad the Oilers left Texas!

I'm happy to be a Texans fan.

I loved that Bum didn't wear his hat "indoors" at the Dome.

I can't stand Jerry Jones and haven't cared for the Cowgirls since he bought the team and fired Tom Landry.

Don't mess with Texas!

Anyway, this fella asked me to reprint what I'd wrote and I didn't have it. So I set out to think about rewriting something.

Evidentally, being a Texan also means either not using a computer, or using a computer but failing to save your work.

BTW - I love Texas. (and saving my work)

“Last year, I talked about all the great places and great heroes who make Texas what it is. I talked about Willie and Waylon and Michael Dell and Michael DeBakey and my Dad and LBJ and Denton Cooley”.

I am a born and raised Texan, not currently living in the Lone Star State. However I must take exception with Willie and LBJ as being listed a “heroes”. Ain’t buying that.

Did you know “Don’t mess with Texas” was actually anti-litter campaign created by Texas state government?

There at the old Astrodome, in front of several thousand men, women, and kids...

Over 75,000...standing room only...and we had lost! Bum was "feeling no pain."

I was there.
