I’d be curious to learn whether the dig was enabled by, say, ground penetrating radar studies on the site.

I was there about the same time and had the exact same experience. I was young and fit at the time and getting up the 200 or so steps in the thin air was not too big of a problem. However, on the way down my legs were shaking like rubber bands and it took me twice as long as it did to get to the top.

Anyway, it was a fascinating place. I’d love to go back and show my wife and kids someday, and I’d like to hear more about what they find.

Time life books on the Yucatan, is another great resource. I spent a few days at Chichen Itza, Tulum and through the jungle to Coba where I met a high school classmate working in a Basque restaurant 70 miles into the jungle and 2200 miles south of Newport Harbor High School, where we both graduated in 1966.
