I just purchased a Mossberg 500 12ga pump,(aka mavrick 88) I had a spare barrel, cut it down to 19"'s, it cost $157 dollars at Wally World.. I LOVE that place!

People are stupid to go into the woods w/o a shotgun.

If I had been there with the 12ga,, they would know what kind of bear it was.

My old parish priest was asked to go with a Ranger after they got a report of people getting killed by a grizzly.

Two people mauled to death. He told me it appeared the people got between a mommy bear and her cub

The ranger was familiar with the bear and my priest said he all but cried having to kill it, but after killing a person there is no reprieve for the bear.

Bear Alert

The Alaska State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising
hikers, hunters, fishermen, and golfers to take extra precautions
and be on the alert for bears while in the area.

They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little
bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bears
unexpectedly.

They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an
encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs
of bear activity.

People should be able to recognize the difference between black
bear and grizzly bear droppings.

Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly
squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings are large, have bells in them and smell like pepper
spray.

Agree completely, in general it's my defensive weapon of choice. However, we're talking National Park. Not in, but at a small campground a few miles away, which I suspect is a feeder when the park is full. Still smart to be sure one is in the tent with you. Some people swear by spray. You can pull the "trigger" earlier, there being no potential legal issues.

kanawa: “We don’t know if it was one bear, two bears, a black bear or grizzly bear,”

Per other articles, they don't know if it was one attack, or several. I wouldn't think tat would be hard to figure out, given two survivors. 7 posted on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 7:57:09 PM by kanawa

So many jokes about bears with jingling stomachs. Doesn't hurt. Heavy feet are good to have in bear and snake country. My opinion only, but the critters get used to our solutions.

The old 30-30 is more powerful than the 44 magnum... just FYI....

Studies Show Bear Spray More Effective Than Guns Against Grizzlies

With all the debate lately over whether visitors should be allowed to carry weapons in national parks, much has been said about the need for protection against wild animals, bears in particular. Well, studies show bear spray is a much more effective deterrent than a speeding bullet.

Evidence of human-bear encounters even suggests that shooting a bear can escalate the seriousness of an attack, while encounters where firearms are not used are less likely to result in injury or death of the human or the bear. While firearms can kill a bear, can a bullet kill quickly enough — and can the shooter be accurate enough — to prevent a dangerous, even fatal, attack?

The question is not one of marksmanship or clear thinking in the face of a growling bear, for even a skilled
marksman with steady nerves may have a slim chance of deterring a bear attack with a gun. Law
enforcement agents for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have experience that supports this reality —
based on their investigations of human-bear encounters since 1992, persons encountering grizzlies and
defending themselves with firearms suffer injury about 50% of the time. During the same period, persons
defending themselves with pepper spray escaped injury most of the time, and those that were injured
experienced shorter duration attacks and less severe injuries.

That snippet was taken from a report prepared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Predators, by nature look upon man as food. Only gunpowder changed that natural order on the food chain.

As soon as Americans were denied their Constitutional Right to be armed, and to shoot any predator which in their opinion was a risk to their life or property, just that soon did predators begin to once again eye humans for their caliric value.

Fire the socialism impaired AgencyPersons like Capt. Shepherd - then heed Jefferson about being at all times armed, for in such manner is tyranny kept in check.

If socialism impaired perveyers of tyranny like the puzzled GamePerson had allowed those campers to be armed, that bear would be at the taxidermist and the campers enjoying roast bear.

Thanks to the GamePersons, the bear got to munch on a human, not the other way around.

I suggest using wounded GamePersons for bait to catch the bear that attacked these campers. Probably, a member of the family the victim of the bear’s lethal attack will be willing to prepare the bait.
