"I would suspect that children would still be possible, and discovering that one has been forced into a blind man’s bluff with ther grim reaper would be rather disconcerting. I also suspect that stasis would play some nasty suprise in there somewhere."

In a, as I said "mature civilization", stasis would indeed be the enemy.

In my scenario, the civilizations near the Galactic Center are ancient, and have been aware of each other for countless generations. They have shared what could reasonably be shared in an interstellar civilization.

One of these things is the medical advancement that makes virtual immortality possible.

Children would indeed be rare. Some are granted to those who have sacrificed in a more dangerous occupation. Some are allowed to those who have made remarkable advances in scientific research.

Our story centers on a rather young individual in this milieu, one granted to remarkable parents.

Like many of our own youngsters, he finds a way to do something incredibly stupid and unforgivable.

Driven by an impetus to do something remarkable on his own behalf, he ends up in trouble far across the Galaxy, and needing help in a place where it is extremely unlikely he could find any, Earth.

This is one of my more unusual situations, a plot in search of characters and background material.

Playing with baby: My grandson loves the free fall after I toss him in the air. He smiles after kicking me and again after I lift him off the floor with my size 11.

It's a strange world.

Put on my jacket and we headed over to a BBQ/house-warming nearby (they've been there since last fall, but it's been raining since then). The "kids" there are about our oldest daughter's age. The weird thing is that one of them went to the same elementary school I did -- only some 30 years later. She was initially surprised I knew the name of the town (nobody ever does); doubly that just a few years ago we met a couple from the same place while waiting in line in Paris to buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower.

Today we finished booking our trip to go back there end of the month. NOw I have a neighbor who wants pictures too.

Must be his Pollock blood, as my son says, cute kid and very active, they call him Little Bill because of a slight resemblance to me.

Children can be really weird. I used to have a little Bill, but now he’s almost a foot taller than I am!

I like the sound of your church, Tubebender (are you a boilermaker?) Once to Every Man and Nation is one of my all time favorites - wish we’d had it at our church. The Old Rugged Cross never fails to put me in tears before the end of the first refrain. An old family friend (long since gone home) said that was his favorite and he wanted it sung at his funeral. You may not have been in World War II but you served just the same at home. Everyone did their part, saved, went without and prayed and worked tirelessly for the War Effort. There is no such spirit today - our nation is sadly and very deeply divided. Our troops aren’t getting the support they need or deserve. (A really big sore spot with me).

Thank you for your sweet post and for your love of country. I hope this next generation catches on.....

"... a plot in search of characters and background material."

ONLY YOU COULD DO THIS.

Not that it takes any special talent. My problem is that I have to create multiple civilizations and species near the Galactic Center to give the story poignance and meaning. Not to mention the technology involved.

Earth characters are easy. (To coin a phrase.)

” . I used to have a little Bill “

I used to have a little Bill. However, I was unaware of little Bill. As the years went by, with accrued interest, it became a Buffalo Bill.
