My A2 never jammed, never had a problem, so M-16. Can’t I just have one of each? ;)
Depends on use. Close up, AK. Need some distance, M-16.
FN-FAL.
I used the M16 back in the 60’s. It was OK, but I suspect newer versions are pretty good. Never had an AK. I had a Chinese SKS that war simple and reliable, though not real accurate............. I think I’d take the M16 over the AK.
The AK-47 also has all the power of a .30-30 deer rifle, (As in not thru a vest), and the accuracy of a Nerf gun. If you want to blow big chunks off of the soft target you’re shooting at, out to 200 yards, go for the AR-15. If you want to hit them from 600 yards, and drop them, go for an AR-10, M-1A, or FN-FAL.
I own both but if you take care of it, keep it clean, and need accuracy the M-16 wins IMO.
If you want something that works in the mud and you are not shooting past 100 meters the AK is a great choice. I prefer the machined AK variants over the stamped ones and you get more accuracy out of them.
If you gave me 100 low skill soldiers I would choose to equip them with the AK. If you gave me a highly trained rifle squad I would choose the M-16.
In close, either one, with an edge to the AK. Out any distance, though, I’ll take the M-16
For Urban Comabt, the AK.
For the suburban combat, M-16.
For open areas (high deserts), M-16
I generally enjoy these type threads but this one has been done so many times that it is getting boring.

I like the AR-15 because it can hit with impunity out to 400-500 yards. As I get older, I am learning to appreciate the concept of "stand off" distance. $;-)
That said, the AK-47 is a good gun, too. They both have stood the test of time, haven't they?
That said, I'd like to hijack this thread a little bit and ask anyone out there if they know where one can acquire Black Hills Mk 262 Mod 1 5.56x45 ammo (50 rnd. white boxes). This ammo is similar to the Blue Box 77gr reloads (which are acceptable), but differ from the civilain loading in three ways:
1) Slightly hotter -- about 2,780 fps vs. 2,650.
2) Modified Sierra Match King 77gr bullet; has a cannelure to allow crimping for better functioning in automatic weapons.
3) Crimped primer.
Anyone know where either can be gotten without breaking the bank?
And don't let anyone tell you they're no good beyond 200 yards. If you take your time and learn, really learn how to shoot your AK you can score consistent hits on man sized targets well past 300 yards with one.
They won't be 'one hole' hits, but hits they will be.
Mine puts 'minute of bad guy' hits on targets at that distance.
Don't get me wrong, I love my AR. It's a precision ass-kicker capable of putting a bad guy down at ranges in excess of 500 yards. But you can't toss your AR into a muddy pond, pull it out a week later, kick the bolt open, and rock and roll with it like you can an AK.
I would love to have my old M-14, and would HAVE one if they hadn’t put that damn selector switch on it, thereby making it a class 3 weapon and restricted. the knock-offs with the new semi-auto receivers are excellent but too pricey.
How about for somebody that can’t spend $1000+ on a long gun?
And it makes a very distinctive sound when fired...
Ever see the video of when Mikhail Kalashnakov met Eugene Stoner?
The conversation turned to the 5.56mm round. Kalashnakov got irked with Stoner and said, IIRC, “I blame you for this! Everything was fine with the 7.62 mm round until you came along!”
I dont like commie weapons.
Sig 556 hands down.
