Actually, Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood. That is the first thing I thought of when I saw this headline.
Freeman was the African who helped Robin Hood escape the Middle Eastern prison, and went with him to England.

King Louis IX of France, "Saint Louis," led the Eighth Crusade to Tunis, supposedly to provide a base for an attack on Egypt, whose forces were pressuring the Crusaders. There was some talk of coordinating attacks on Egypt and Syria with the Mongols.
The siege failed and Louis died in Tunisia. The treaty provided, however, for free trade with Tunis and the right to house priests and monks for the Europeans.
An alternative route to Europe would be that the ruler of Tunis was on good terms with the Christians of Spain.
