How silly.
Intelligence is measured in more than one way. There is more than one type.
My English Mastiff is the smartest dog. He knows when my wife gets up he can climb on the bed to sleep with me. He knows how to wake me but not her when he has to go out. If I am not home he waits. He won’t disturb her.
He knows who should and shouldn’t be in the house.
What he isn’t is active. He won’t fetch a paper, slippers, or run an obstacle course. But, neither will I.
No Border Collies on the smartest list. The list is bogus. But then that is if you consider the Border Collie to be a dog in the intelligence sense of the word. An argument could be made that they transcend dogdom in that area.
I’m surprised that English Springers didn’t make the smart list. We have an ESS and a Sheltie, and accepting for variations in individual dogs our Springer is way smarter than our Sheltie who came in at No. 6.
I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life, but I’ve never had one as sharp as my Sheltie.
My kelpie is smarter than any German Shepherd.
Golden’s are 4th smartest, what happened to Rumdum?
Prior to him we had a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix ("Jerry") also one smart dog, but in different ways and he was very protective of our children when they were small. I can't tell you how many accidents/near accidents this dog prevented with our kids while they were learning to walk.
The dog I had when I married my wife was a Golden Retriever. One smart dog he was, in completely different ways from Teddy and Jerry. "Bonehead" as he was nicknamed never had to be on a leash, and he was one fine hunting dog. Before we had kids, the neighborhood kids would all come over to play with him, he was a real joy and died too soon at age 8.
So I've been blessed to have a bunch of smart dogs and I wouldn't trade a minute with any of 'em. Heck, my dogs have been smarter than most people I know (present company excepted of course....) they'd NEVER vote for a Democrat.
It's a tough nut to crack.
One should always remember that ‘smart’ isn’t necessarily a good feature in a dog. Being ‘smart’ is being a good problem solver. Now if the problem (from the dog’s perspective’ is how to open the refrigerator or get out of the yard...
