If they’re connected to the wheel hub only and not the body the’r not really fenders - they’re fairings. You out with fairings? Seems to be the only way you can have fat tires and undisturbed air behind the vehicle and easier passing.

There we go!!!!! The ‘Shark Nose years’!!!! I’m so sick of the way F1 has gone. Maybe I’m just an old doofus but damn these changes, (EXCEPT for the great driver safety changes since the ‘60’s, Thanks Jackie!!!), crap pisses me off. Let the drivers drive without the electronics. Awe the hell with it, I just miss the old days. Never mind me.

1. Get rid of KERS and let the teams run either 1.5L turbo or 3.5 normally aspirated engines with any number of cylinders they choose.
2. No fuel limits, but no refueling.
3. Eliminate DRS.
4. I wouldn’t mind a little less aero.

McLaren approaches Mercedes over engine switch - report

McLaren has made an exploratory approach to Mercedes about an engine supply, according to the BBC.

McLaren endured a problematic pre-season with its Honda power unit, which was plagued with reliability issues and was lacking performance compared to its rivals. A frustrated Fernando Alonso, whose contract with McLaren expires at the end of 2017, labelled Honda the team’s “only problem” coming into the new season and said it was missing 30km/h of speed on the straights alone.

Honda has since downplayed its chances of rectifying its performance deficit in time for the Australian Grand Prix on March 26, leading to questions about Alonso’s future and whether McLaren should look for a new supplier. According to the BBC, McLaren has approached the reigning world champions, who supplied them engines before they switched to Honda in 2015, about the possibility of a future deal.

The report said McLaren is “evaluating options” in the event its relationship with Honda cannot be made to work. Earlier this week, team boss Eric Boullier conceded the team would be in a much better position with its old engine partner.

Asked if the team would be winning “right now” with a Mercedes engine inside the MCL32, Boullier told Spain’s AS newspaper: “Yes, we’d be winning again.”

A return to Mercedes would be ironic given former McLaren chief Ron Dennis’ assertion that it is impossible in modern F1 to win a championship as a customer team, something which motivated the switch from Mercedes to Honda power in the first place. The reforming of that partnership has fallen well short of rekindling the iconic success of the late 1980s and early 1990s, finishing ninth in 2015 and sixth in 2016.

The removal of the restrictive engine token system, which limited the amount of changes that could be made to an engine during an active campaign, was seen as the perfect opportunity for Honda to rise back to the top in 2017 after starting the V6 turbo era a year later than its rivals. However, F1 boss Yusuke Hasegawa has admitted he was surprised by the performance of rivals Mercedes and Ferrari in winter testing.

McLaren is wary of another poor season impacting its ongoing search for a title sponsor, which executive director Zak Brown hopes to secure by 2018, but it is also mindful of Alonso’s contract situation. Though the two-time world champion is not going to consider his future until the summer break, Boullier believes the only hope McLaren has of keeping the Spaniard is to deliver a competitive car to him this season.

And meanwhile, Honda made an impressive showing last weekend at St. Petersburg in the IndyCar race - including a win. Granted, they’re supplying multiple engines there, but why can’t they pull it together in their F1 engine program?

As I recall Jay Leno has a rare steam car with a four cylinder engine in the back of the car.

Since each stroke is powered it is equivalent to a 16 cylinder gasoline engine.

I recall a HP rating in the low 1,000’s...

Andretti will receive 2017 Cameron Argetsinger Award

WATKINS GLEN, March 22, 2017 — Mario Andretti will be honored on Aug. 31 by the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) with the 2017 Cameron R. Argetsinger Award for Outstanding Contributions to Motorsports.

Andretti is considered by many to be the greatest race car driver in the history of the sport, posting victories at virtually every level of motorsports in a career that spanned five decades.

Andretti will receive the Argetsinger Award at a gala dinner presented by NASCAR, International Speedway Corp., Watkins Glen International and IMSA. The dinner, which is open to the public, will be at the internationally renowned Corning Museum of Glass in nearby Corning, NY.

The dinner precedes the Verizon IndyCar Grand Prix at The Glen weekend at WGI.

The 2017 award will be the fourth presented by the IMRRC. Chip Ganassi was the inaugural recipient in 2014. Richard Petty was the 2015 honoree, and Roger Penske was cited in 2016.

The award memorializes Cameron R. Argetsinger, founder and organizer of the first races at Watkins Glen almost 70 years ago.

“Watkins Glen’s impact on auto racing can’t be measured, and we have Cameron Argetsinger to thank. This award represents the influence he had on our sport, and to follow Chip Ganassi, Richard Petty and Roger Penske to receive the Argetsinger Award is a tremendous honor,” Andretti said.

Andretti has supported the work of the Racing Research Center since its opening in 1999. He serves on the Center’s Drivers Council and twice has been chairman of the annual membership campaign.

“The Racing Research Center is doing valuable work, taking care of the history of racing. The collections are a great source of information, and they’re always expanding,” Andretti said. “This success shows that we in racing understand how important the work is, and I’m proud to have been involved with the Center from the beginning.”

Bobby Rahal, chairman of the IMRRC’s Governing Council, described Andretti as “an icon of the world, let alone the sport of auto racing.”

“The name ‘Mario’ is immediately recognized around the globe, in the same way other one-name celebrities have become household words, such as Elvis and Pele,” Rahal said. “It’s a privilege for the IMRRC to honor Mario with the Cameron R. Argetsinger Award. His impact on the sport for more than 50 years cannot be measured.”

The Cameron R. Argetsinger Award Dinner is open to the public, but tickets are limited. The ticket price is $250 per person.

“As the only driver in history to win the Formula One Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, Mario Andretti is in a class by himself,” Chitwood said. “His passion, skill and success in racing are legendary, and it is extremely fitting that he be recognized with the Cameron R. Argetsinger Award for Outstanding Contributions to Motorsports.”

Andretti won the Indy Car National Championship four times and was a three-time winner at Sebring. In a competition career that began in 1959 at the age of 19, four years after arriving in the United States from his native Italy, Andretti earned 111 racing victories. He won races in formula cars, sports cars, sprint cars and stock cars and on ovals, road courses, drag strips, dirt and pavement.

“The label ‘living legend’ is perhaps a bit over-used these days, but when referencing Mario Andretti it’s a statement of fact,” Scott Atherton, IMSA president and chief operating officer, said. “His long list of accomplishments at the highest levels of multiple forms of motorsport places him in a category all his own and has established a benchmark that is unlikely to ever be duplicated. For these reasons and many more, he is a most appropriate and deserving recipient of the Argetsinger Award.”

“He is a racer, a champion, a family man and a father. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better person in motorsports than Mario,” said Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International.

The Glen was the site of Andretti’s triumphant homecoming in1978, wearing the crown of World Champion into the U.S. Grand Prix. Driving for Lotus, Andretti had become the first driver in motor racing history to win the Formula One and Indy Car titles. He joined Phil Hill as the only American ever to capture the world title.

Andretti was named Driver of the Year in three different decades: the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. He was named Driver of the Quarter Century in the 1990s, and the Associated Press named him Driver of the Century in January 2000.
