Teams and drivers will score double points at next years final Grand Prix. The move is just one of several regulation changes announced by Formula One racings governing body, the FIA, on Monday. Others include allocating permanent race numbers to drivers, a five-second time penalty for minor rule infringements, and - from 2015 - a global cost cap.
Following a meeting of the F1 Strategy Group and the Formula One Commission in Paris, the following items have been unanimously approved:
Points for the last race
Double drivers and constructors points will be awarded at the final race of the Formula One season - Abu Dhabi for 2014 - in order to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign.
Driver numbers
Drivers will be asked to choose their race number, between 2 and 99, for the duration of their career in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Number 1 will be reserved for the current world champion, should he choose to use it. If more than one driver choses the same number, priority will be given to the driver who finished highest in the previous years championship.
Cost cap
The principle of a global cost cap has been adopted. The limit will be applied from January 2015. A working group will be established within the coming days comprising the FIA, representatives of the Commercial Rights Holder and Team representatives. The objective of the working group will be to have regulations approved by the end of June 2014.
New penalties
The principle of a five-second penalty for minor infringements was agreed. In what form such a penalty will be applied will be discussed with the Formula One teams in order that a new regulation be introduced for 2014 season.
Pirelli tyre test - Bahrain, December 17-19, 2013
The F1 Commission agreed to a change to the 2013 Sporting Regulations, on safety grounds, allowing the Formula One tyre supplier to carry out a three-day test in Bahrain from December 17-19, 2013. All Formula One teams have been invited to take part in the test and six have accepted: Red Bull Racing, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Force India and Toro Rosso.

Does this mean we will eventually get around to the business of “retiring” numbers?
Double points... for? Hazard pay? Machinegun nest fire to avoid at the back chicane?
And what the Hell is with Driver numbers? I mean... is it that hard these days to know who is who? I mean, look for me... I am the guy with the Lucky Strike logo... er, maybe not.
Force India’s lineup is set, Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez.
Has the France family bought into F1 or something?
How do you like the new rules?
I read Kimi wants # 69
yes I had missed it! ;^)
I agree
Felipe Massa was back at Ferraris Maranello headquarters over the weekend to share in the teams Christmas celebrations and to bid them a final farewell ahead of his move to Williams for 2014. And he came away with a rather special present - the V8 engine from the Ferrari F2008 which so nearly took him to the 2008 world championship.
We started together so many years ago and I want to thank all of you, mechanics, engineers, everyone who works at the track and behind the scenes in Maranello, said an emotional Massa, who first raced for Ferrari in 2006.
Each one of you has always given me so much support, especially in the most difficult moments and I will never forget what Ferrari did for me when I had my accident in 2009. Its in these circumstances that one understands what it means to be really loved and the atmosphere at Ferrari and the unique feeling of being part of the family is something I will miss a lot.
The Brazilian driver also paid tribute to Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, and found time to joke with his former team mate Fernando Alonso about the 2010 German Grand Prix, where he was famously asked to move aside for the Spaniard.
I look on you as my big brother, he said of Domenicali. I thank you for everything you have done for me and for the opportunities you and the President have given me. Thanks also to you Fer, we will meet again on track and this time I will try not to let you through.
Massa, who is succeeded at Ferrari by the returning Kimi Raikkonen, will now be spending some family time in Brazil before beginning in earnest his 2014 preparations with Williams.
That engine would look nice in my living room, but the wife might object..............
