Good morning gardeners! Wow June is here already. I hope all of your gardens are flourishing. Can you believe that last year at this time there were freeze and frost warnings for the North, Northeast and some of the higher elevations? This year the freeze warnings seem to be contained within a certain household in Tennessee. I just had to say that, couldnt help myself!

Site developers seek help for urban garden in Birmingham, Alabama
Birmingham - Part of a 40-acre commercial site in Calera that went unsold because
of the economic downturn has been turned into something the owner hopes will benefit
the community - a vegetable and fruit garden.
Violators can be fined $25,000! City posted a cease-and-desist order at community
garden
It started as a plan to plant beets, potatoes and carrots. But all that’s grown
in a community garden in St. Thomas has been resentment and animosity.
A zoning infraction, a YouTube video and a death threat are also part of the plot,
as a neighbourly project wilts before it gets roots.
Urban farms don’t make money - so what?
Over on Earth Island Journal, Sena Christian has an excellent, rigorously reported
article about the tough economics of urban farming. She focuses on some of the more
famous city farms of the Bay Area, where EIJ is based - City Slicker Farms, People’s
Grocery - but she also discusses projects like Milwaukee’s Growing Power. And she
finishes the piece with a farm I’d never heard of before:
Greensgrow, in Philadelphia.
Urban Agriculture Comes to Fort Worth, Texas
Fort Worth is a bit behind the times on the urban agriculture movement, but the
city is starting to embrace it at last. Above is the first official city-approved
community garden in the city of Fort Worth - the Fairmount Community Garden, located
at 5th & Maddox across from Fairmount Park in the Fairmount neighborhood in the
Near Southside.
Photographer Anne Hamersky documents farms and city farmers
My portrait and documentary photographs have appeared in LIFE, Time, People, Vanity
Fair, Mother Jones, Yoga Journal and National Geographic Traveler, among many others.
My forthcoming book, “Farm Together Now” with co-authors Amy Franceschini and Daniel
Tucker (Chronicle Books) illustrates how ordinary people across the United States
are creating a more sustainable, cleaner and safer food system, one farm at a time.

2010 Fire Season Outlook calls for increase in wildfire activity in parts of Western U.S.
Boise, ID Coming off a strong El Niño winter weather pattern, portions of the western United States will enter the 2010 fire season drier than normal, according to the annual Fire Season Outlook released by the Predictive Services group at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). The drier conditions suggest higher than normal wildfire potential for the Northern Rockies of Montana and Idaho; parts of eastern Washington; northwestern Wyoming; and a portion of south-central Oregon stretching down into the northeastern corner of California.
The strong El Niño in the southern Pacific Ocean over the winter flexed its muscle, said Robyn Heffernan, the deputy fire weather program manager for NIFC. Consequently, a lot of the northern half of the western United States got significantly less snowfall over the winter, which will mean drier fuels once summer arrives.
Several other regions of the country are also abnormally dry heading into late spring and early summer: the northern Great Lakes region; central Alaska; southern Arizona; and a section of southern Georgia, Alabama, and northern Florida. These areas, however, will probably benefit from normal seasonal rains by midsummer. Hawaii was also influenced by the winter weather pattern, resulting in the leeward side of the islands being dry. Hawaiis dry conditions should persist all summer.
Although it too had a dry winter, Nevada should see a below-normal fire season because dry weather will prevent normal desert grass growthgrass that typically fuels summer fires.
While El Niño denied normal snowfalls and winter rains in some parts of the country, it had a dampening effect in other regions heading into the traditional summer fire season. The mountainous areas of Arizona, New Mexico, southern Utah and southern Colorado were inundated with heavy snows over the winter, and forested areas will not have enough time to dry to critical levels before summer rains begin to fall.
After good moisture last year that inhibited wildfires over most of the country, 2010 might see a spike in fire activityparticularly in the northern half of the west, Heffernan added.
The seasonal outlook produced by NIFC evaluates wildland fuels, weather forecasts, climate and drought data and identifies the general outlook for wildland fire activity across the United States. The full seasonal assessment can be viewed at: http://www.predictiveservices.nifc.gov/outlooks.htm

Organic Urban Farming Demo by Ryan Rowinski at Michigan State Fair 2009
While my favorite things have traditionally been the livestock and the agricultural

farming installed right on the Michigan State Fairgrounds. It was the creation of
Ryan Rowinski, who is a graduate of the Michigan State soil science program, and
donated his time, experience, and obvious green thumb to the Fair this year.
