12 Simple Beauty Hacks From The Kitchen

Posted By TipNut On November 30, 2009 @ 2:11 am In Beauty & Health | No Comments

1. Olive oil can be used to remove eye makeup (use cold pressed extra virgin olive). Also see DIY Eye Makeup Remover Recipes [1].
2. Pour a bit of sesame oil on a cotton ball and wipe gently across eye lids to remove waterproof mascara.
3. Bring shine to your hair with a bit of honey. Mix 1 tsp of honey into 1 quart of warm water and use as a rinse after shampooing (rinse away shampoo first). Do not wash out the honey/water mix, leave in hair and style as usual. Also see Honey Hair Treatment Recipes [2].
4. Brighten your smile with strawberries & baking soda. First mash a fresh strawberry and add about a tsp of baking soda. Spread on toothbrush and rub strawberry mash onto teeth. Leave for a couple minutes then brush teeth clean. Rinse mouth well. Eating apples (bite into apples, don’t eat in pieces) is also a natural way to whiten teeth. Because the fruit is naturally acidic, don’t use this method of teeth whitening more than once a week to protect your teeth from damage. Also see Homemade Toothpaste, Mouthwash & Teeth Whiteners [3].
5. For healthy nails and cuticles, regularly soak them in olive oil for 30 minutes.
6. Dab cooled brewed tea onto face to use as an astringent, good for pimple control.
7. Gently apply egg whites to puffy bags underneath eyes, allow to dry then rinse off. Also see Help For Puffy Eyes: Home Remedies [4].
8. Exfoliate skin with a paste of baking soda and water.
9. Massage plain yogurt into scalp and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse. Will help with itchy scalp and dandruff. Also see 9 Home Remedies For Dandruff [5].
10. Use lemon juice to remove dark patches around elbows. Apply to skin area and leave on for 20 minutes, wash away. Do daily until discoloration disappears. Also see Dry Elbow Home Remedies & Treatments [6].
11. Tighten pores and shrink large pores by mixing table salt and buttermilk into a paste. Massage into skin. Rinse off with warm water. Repeat this treatment twice a day (morning and night) until results are satisfactory.
12. Facial Moisturizer: Rub the inside of an avocado peel on your face, lightly massaging skin. Leave for 15 minutes then rinse clean with water, pat dry. Also see 11 Easy Food Facials – Homemade Recipes [7].

Color Enhancing Shampoos & Rinses: Natural Alternatives

Posted By TipNut On September 25, 2009 @ 6:11 am In Beauty & Health | No Comments

Just mix one of these solutions with your favorite shampoo for an easy way to give your natural hair color a boost without harsh chemicals or dyes. If you no longer use shampoo (see Free Yourself From Shampoo: The No Shampoo Alternative [1]), I have some highlights enhancing hair rinse recipes at the bottom as an alternative for you.

Healthy Long Hair With Lots Of Color
Directions: Mix 1 cup of shampoo with 1 cup of the following:

* Blondes: Steep 1 tablespoon chamomile, calendula or powdered rhubarb root in 1 cup boiling water for thirty minutes.
* Brunettes: Add 1 cup strong black coffee *OR* 1 cup water in which you have steeped 1 tablespoon powdered black walnut shells, allspice, or cloves for thirty minutes.
* Redheads: Add 1 cup red wine and/or real orange juice, *OR* 1 cup water in which 1 tablespoon red hibiscus or 2 tablespoons red clover have been steeped thirty minutes.

To Brighten Hair Naturally

* Beat an egg white into a cup of shampoo, leave this mixture on your hair for 15 minutes before you wash it.
* Blond Hair: Mix shampoo with an equal amount of strong chamomile tea (2 or 3 tablespoons to 1 cup of water).
* Dark Hair: Add 1/4 cup of crushed fresh blackberries to a cup of shampoo and use this mixture to wash hair.
* Red Hair: Use raspberries instead of blackberries.
* Black Hair: Make hair shiny by mixing strong, freshly brewed black coffee half and half with shampoo.

Source: Ageless Natural Beauty By Sally Freeman
Natural Highlights Enhancers

Simmer the ingredients over low heat for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and strain. After washing hair as you normally do, rinse with the infusion twice (you’ll need to catch the first rinse with a big bowl so you can use it again for the second rinse).

* Blonde Hair: 1/4 cup dried chamomile blossoms; 2 cups distilled water.
* Brown Hair: 1/4 cup dried rosemary or sage leaves; 2 cups distilled water.
* Red Hair: 1/4 cup dried calendula blossoms; 2 cups distilled water.

Tip: The more regularly you use these color and highlights enhancers, the more effective they will be (and last longer).

12 Heartburn Remedies Plus Causes & Prevention Tips

Posted By TipNut On August 18, 2009 @ 6:34 am In Beauty & Health | 6 Comments

Baking Soda And Water Is An Old Time Remedy For Heartburn That Works

Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful and burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone usually associated with regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is a major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); acid reflux is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough, and may even mimic asthma.

Despite its name, heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart; it is so called because of a burning sensation near to where the heart is located – although some heart problems may give rise to a similar burning sensation. Compounding the confusion is the fact that hydrochloric acid from the stomach comes back up the esophagus because of a problem with the cardiac sphincter, a valve which misleadingly contains the word “cardiac,” referring to the cardia as part of the stomach and not, as might be thought, to the heart. Source: Wikipedia [1].
Heartburn Treatment & Remedies

Everybody’s different so what works for one may not work for another. Once you’ve found a remedy that works for you–stick with it.

1. Chamomile Tea: Sip during attacks of heartburn as well as after meals to prevent heartburn from happening.
2. Peppermint Tea: Sip during attacks of heartburn as well as after meals to prevent heartburn from happening.
3. Baking Soda & Water: This will help neutralize stomach acid but this remedy should only be used moderately, regular use could dramatically increase your salt intake (baking soda is high in salt). Mix 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of baking soda per glass of water. Because of the high salt content in baking soda, pregnant women shouldn’t use this remedy.
4. Ginger: Cook into food, sip Ginger tea or chew a fresh piece to relieve heartburn.
5. Celery: Eating a stalk of raw celery can help treat heartburn (excellent choice for pregnant women).
6. Almonds: Chew on raw almonds until heartburn eases–just a handful should do it.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar: Is there anything that ACV can’t tackle? A teaspoon to two tablespoons (whatever you need) of apple cider vinegar should stop heartburn in its tracks. Another remedy is to mix apple cider vinegar with honey (2:1 ratio).
8. Mustard: Take a spoonful (or two if needed) of mustard when heartburn hits…will take a minute or two to bring relief.
9. Pickle Juice: Take a drink or two of this to settle your stomach.
10. Pineapple: Eat a slice or two of fresh pineapple when heartburn hits or right after meals.
11. Yogurt: Eating a couple spoonfuls of yogurt when you feel heartburn coming on can help ease it away. If you regularly suffer from heartburn, try adding yogurt to your diet on a regular basis–it’s good for you in more ways than one (excellent choice for pregnant women).
12. Lemon Juice: Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice to half a glass of water and drink for heartburn relief (mentioned previously on 15 Helpful Household Lemon Aids [2]).

Heartburn Symptoms

* Burning feeling or sense of pressure inside your chest
* Burping
* Bitter or sour taste in your mouth
* Rising bile in your throat

If you experience symptoms on a daily basis, you may be suffering from acid reflux disease, check with your doctor if symptoms are persistent.
Preventing Heartburn: Triggers & Causes

Pay attention to your diet, if you find a common culprit everytime you get heartburn avoid eating it in the future. Some habits and foods that are common triggers for heartburn that you may want to avoid if you suffer regularly from it:

Foods:

* Chocolate
* Coffee & caffeine beverages or foods
* Soda beverages
* Fried & fatty foods
* Spicy foods
* Tomatoes
* Onions

Habits:

* Smoking: Smoking can affect the digestive system and the esophagus, if you’re a regular smoker that suffers from heartburn, consider quitting or at least dramatically reducing the amount of cigarettes you smoke.
* Shed Tight Clothing: Wearing clothes or belts that are tight around the waist can trigger heartburn.
* Snacking Before Bed: Avoid eating 2 or 3 hours before you go to bed or laying down to give your body time to digest the food you’re eating.
* Lose Weight: If you are a few pounds overweight or even obese, losing weight can help stop regular occurrences of heartburn.
* Exercise: Go for a walk after each meal to help your body digest. If that’s not possible for every meal, do it at least once a day after the heaviest meal (usually supper).

12 Home Remedies for Nausea

Posted By TipNut On July 11, 2007 @ 6:35 am In Beauty & Health | 2 Comments

If the cause of nausea is from morning sickness due to pregnancy, please don’t try any of these home remedies until your doctor okays it.

Home Remedies for Nausea

1. Ginger: Ginger snaps, Candied ginger [1], Ginger Ale, 1/2 tsp Ginger powder mixed in glass of water, sip
2. Teas: Peppermint, Ginger, Chamomile, Lemon, Raspberry, Cinnamon. Can also try a tea made with fresh ginger and lemon juice or a few cloves steeped in hot water
3. Tummy Munchies: Soda crackers, Digestive biscuits, Animal crackers, Melba toast, Graham crackers, Cheerios (without the milk)
4. Flat 7-Up, Coca-Cola, Ginger Ale or try Cola Syrup
5. Sucking on hard candy (like peppermints, lifesavers, sour candy)
6. 1 TBS apple cider vinegar plus 1 TBS honey mixed in 1 cup of water, sip. Can be hot or cold drink, whichever you prefer
7. 1/2 tsp Baking soda in glass of warm water (*a no-no if you’re pregnant)
8. Sip dill pickle juice
9. Fresh lime or lemon squeezed in glass of water, sprinkle a little salt on top, sip
10. 1 tsp cumin seeds mixed in a glass of milk, or a glob of yogurt, or eat the seeds plain
11. Suck on popsicles, ice chips, ice cubes
12. Suck on a wedge of lemon or lime

If the cause of nausea is unknown and persists for more than a couple days, see your doctor. If you’re in physical pain and vomiting, or know of a recent head injury (even the seemingly silly bad bumps) and you’re nauseous, see a doctor.

Love it!! It’s amazing how you remember the special interests of all us Freepers.<<<

LOL, it is easier to remember your interests, than it is your names.

My mind has always been out of wack....you have no idea how long it took me to get your name right, so your pings would go through, no matter how I twisted it, it did not work.

The worst is that I have always had a problem with names, it isn’t just ‘folks’, but for the names that I deal with in the terror world or over the years, an author that I wanted to find more of their books for reading, if it was not written down in my purse, it was gone forever.

I was laughing, when I posted the rock rug, but the fact is that it would be healthy for your whole body.

LOL, think how strong you will grow, by picking up your rock rug and shaking it out....[joking]

All the nerves in the body will connect to the feet, and when your head aches, if you will get someone to massage your feet, the headache will go away, so will many other problems.

Reflexology has been around longer than we have.

When my brother was here last, he took off his shoes and was rubbing one foot against the other in the recliner, said he was hurting....of course he isn’t young any longer.

He did not know that our grandfather, did the same thing each night with his feet, rubbed them together and dug into the areas that showed real pain when he rubbed it, to relax that nerve.

I have always did the same and at one time had a chart that showed the different areas of the body, in relation to the feet.

On the other side of our family, my aunt used reflexology on my grandmother, she was a hump backed lady and must have had a lot of pain in her life, but Aunt Babe took good care of granny and she lived to be 95.

On one of the essential oil groups, a few years ago, they did a lot of talking about smooth rocks and marbles in a dishpan, to massage the feet, said it was a good thing to do
for your feet and entire body.

17. Ginger: Brew a tea with 1/2 teaspoon ginger per cup of boiling water. Strain before drinking. Helps with nausea (also see 12 Home Remedies for Nausea [5]). If you have fresh ginger on hand, chewing a bit is more effective than ginger tea. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger with 1 teaspoon of honey for cough relief. Drink tea to fight motion sickness (or chew on a fresh piece).

How To Make Homemade Stick Deodorant

Posted By TipNut On March 20, 2009 @ 1:01 pm In Beauty & Health | 4 Comments

Today’s feature is from Little House In The Suburbs with this how-to for Homemade Stick Deodorant [1]:

Homemade Stick Deodorant Recipe From littlehouseinthesuburbs.com

But aluminum crammed in your pores cannot be good for you, and it seems in recent years that store-bought deodorant is becoming less and less effective anyway.

This deodorant uses a natural moisture absorber (cornstarch), a natural deodorizer (baking soda), and a natural anti-bacteria/fungal oil (tea tree oil) to keep any stink from developing in the first place.

You can stop at the powder stage and just use that as a deodorant, but if you want the stick–the trick is adding solid coconut oil (about 2 TBS or so), who’da thunk! For the deodorant container, recycle ones that you’ve used and emptied then you can use them again and again with this homemade version.

Floral Infused Olive Oil: Rich Beauty Aid

Posted By TipNut On February 24, 2009 @ 10:50 am In Beauty & Health | 7 Comments

Did you know olive oil is a lovely (and natural) skin moisturizer? Here’s a way to make it more special…infuse it with flowers picked fresh from your garden!

Flowers & Olive Oil - Tipnut.com
Floral Infused Olive Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

Glass jar (pint)
Flower petals (1 1/2 cups)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (1 3/4 cups)
6 Vitamin E Capsules (400 IU)

Directions:

* Fill a clean jar with your choice of fresh flower petals or buds. Pierce the vitamin capsules and squeeze the oil into the jar on top of the petals.
* Heat olive oil over medium heat then pour over petals. Seal and shake jar gently to mix.
* Place the jar in a sunny location and turn it over daily for 2 weeks.
* After 2 weeks, strain the oil to remove all petals then bottle in a sterilized container.

Tips For Use

* Use as a bath oil (2 to 3 TBS) or apply on skin after bathing/showering and use as a body moisturizer.
* Apply to dry patches of skin on hands, elbows [1], knees, feet.
* Can be used as a facial moisturizer, be careful not to get the infused oil in your eyes.
* Some believe that eczema, rosesca and stretch marks benefit from applications of olive oil, try a regular treatment to see if it helps.

Flower Choices With Reported Skin Healing & Therapeutic Qualities

* Echinacea, Lavender, Marigolds, Rose Petals, Pansies, Calendula
* Herbs can also be used

Note:

* Do not use petals that have been sprayed with chemicals, they’ll transfer to the oil and then be absorbed by your skin.

How To Consolidate Your Lipsticks

Posted By TipNut On January 6, 2009 @ 1:13 pm In Beauty & Health | 3 Comments

Today’s feature is from Domino with How To Consolidate Your Lipsticks [1]:

You can always consolidate your collection by squishing each bullet into an empty palette—really satisfying—then scooping out the bottom (there’s more left in there than it looks).

Or here’s the less artsy, more polished DIY way: microwave each shade individually (a cream pitcher works well) and pour them into a palette, where it will harden all smooth and perfect.

The first thing that came to mind after reading this was how perfect this would be to split a lipstick into two. You’d need two palettes for this, but you can keep one at home and tuck another into your purse or work tote.

This is also a neat way to salvage broken lipsticks or the last bit of lipstick in the bottom of a lipstick holder.

Please visit the site above for all the details, good idea!

Homemade Deodorant: Instructions & Recipe

Posted By TipNut On August 5, 2008 @ 1:07 pm In Beauty & Health | 8 Comments

Today’s feature is from Angry Chicken with a really nice recipe for Homemade Deodorant (yup.) [1]:

… I love making body products and get so sick of reading ingredients and worrying about all that. I also wanted to make my own because I thrive on the Stick-It-To-The-Man feeling I get when I don’t have to buy basic necessities that most people assume you have to buy, you know? I find it thrilling.

The ingredients used:

3 TBS shea butter
3 TBS baking soda
2 TBS corn starch
2 TBS cocoa butter
2 vitamin E oil gel caps (squeeze out the oil)

Everything’s melted together, next some essential oil mixed in and then the mixture is refrigerated until set. So-Easy! Make sure to visit the site to get all the recipe’s details & info.

The nice thing about making your own deodorant is that you can always adjust to your personal needs or preferences. Less scent? No problem! Once you find a base recipe that you really like, you can switch around fragrances. Some days you may like to be “fruity or citrus-y”, others a more floral fragrance. Make 2 or 3 different scents out of one batch and you’ll have an option to fit your mood each morning .

>>>LOL, it is easier to remember your interests, than it is your names.<<<

I once decided I would overcome that problem of remembering names - tried association...

Of course that has it’s problems too... A local minister’s wife whose last name was Shaw was associated with the huge loom she had (Think of the loom and think of weaving a shaw)- so I associated the two and kept calling her Mrs. Weaver..... Geeesh it was not as easy as I thought it would be. Had to remember two things instead of one... LOL

Stop Bleeding With Ground Black Pepper

Posted By TipNut On July 15, 2008 @ 7:32 am In Beauty & Health | 5 Comments

Here’s a neat tip I found in my notes (loose tip page from an old community cookbook):

When accidentally cutting your finger or your hand, cover with a generous amount of black pepper.

Contrary to ones thinking this will not burn, instead the pepper stops the bleeding, is most healing, takes out the soreness also forms a crust over the cut to keep out infection.

Who knew! I did try this on a new little cut I have just to see if the pepper would sting and found that it didn’t at all. The cut is a bit deep, wasn’t bleeding, but it is a day old so the healing process already started before I applied the pepper.

You will want to rinse a cut first to clean it before applying the pepper, and this would be for minor cuts and scrapes that won’t stop bleeding.

I did look around a bit online to see if I could find any info on why ground black pepper stops bleeding and although there was some information that pepper can be used for this, I didn’t find any solid answers explaining why it works. However I did find this on a discussion page in Wikipedia [1]:

In a discussion with a friend working in catering I was told that black pepper was used in kitchen as a way to stop the bleeding of light cuts ? Any idea why ?

Pepper has some antibacterial properties; the small bits may provide places for platelets to glom onto and quickly begin coagulation, and lastly, probably because it’s easily available in a big kitchen. I used to use salt for the same purpose, for the same reason. (For small surface scratches / very shallow cuts, nothing deep. Stings a bit but not intolerably.)

Tip:

* Collect those little pepper packets you get with take-out and stash a few in your wallet, car and first aid kit so you’ll always have some pepper within reach–just in case!

Save cuttings from strawberries (leaves, tops) to make this strawberry skin treatment for clearer skin.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup strawberry leaves
1 1/2 cups boiling water

Directions:

* Pour water over strawberry leaves in a glass bowl and cover. Steep for 2 hours.
* Strain and pour the water into a clean jar, seal with a lid and refrigerate.

Dry & Chapped Hands Remedies

Posted By TipNut On October 29, 2007 @ 8:22 am In Beauty & Health | 5 Comments

Homemade Chapped Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup Cocoa Butter
1 cup Shea Butter
1/2 cup Jojoba Oil
1/4 cup Beeswax

Directions:

* If you have a large enough Pyrex measuring cup, place ingredients in that or just use a deep casserole dish of some kind. Loosely cover the top with foil (for steam and moisture to escape).
* Heat in oven at 180°F for two hours or until all ingredients are melted.
* Stir very well then pour into heat proof jars with mouths large enough for your hand to get in. Once cool, cover with lids and let set fully.
* Use as needed on dry or chapped skin (it doesn’t take much).

Alternative Hand Care Tips

If commercial hand creams and balms are too harsh for your sensitive skin (due to perfumes, additives, etc.), a couple quick & easy home remedies you could try:

* Crisco Shortening (Plain) – Rub into hands just like a lotion. Strange, but true.
* Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
* Olive Oil – Rub into hands
* Vaseline – Coat hands then cover in cotton gloves (at bedtime)

How To Make Perfume

Posted By TipNut On August 10, 2007 @ 6:17 am In Beauty & Health | 2 Comments

I’m in the mood to hand out a freebie!

Here’s a 28 page report on how to make perfume [1] (pdf). I found this sitting in some long forgotten folder on my computer and saw it came with full rights to distribute as I wish (including give it away free).

Since we Tipnuts love “How To” and “Do-It-Yourself” stuff, I’m happy to share it with you here.

Have no fear, although it’s beginner level information–it’s not one of those cheezy ad filled ebook thingies .

The chapters in the report include:

1. Introduction
2. The History of Perfumery
3. What Can Perfume Be Made From?
4. The First Steps In Order To Make Your Own Perfume
5. How To Go About Making Your Own Perfume
6. What Supplies Do You Need And Where Do You Get Them
7. How To Make Your Own Perfume At Home
8. How To Create Aromatherapy Perfumes at Home
9. Some Simple Recipes To Make Perfume At Home
10. How To Sell Your Home Made Perfume

A sample from the report, this is the simplest of all perfume recipes that you can reproduce at home…
Basic Perfume Recipe

The ingredients you need are as follows:

1. 2 cups of water
2. 2 cup fresh chopped flower blossoms (you may want to use such flowers as lavender, lilac, orange blossoms or honeysuckle).

Now for the directions:

1. In a bowl, put a cheesecloth (make sure that the edges of the cloth hang over the side of the bowl). Fill this with 1 cup of flower blossoms (you choose) and then pour water over them until they are completely covered.
2. Cover the bowl and allow it to sit overnight. The following day, take hold of the edges of the cheesecloth hanging over the side of the bowl and lift it up, then gently squeeze the scented water produced into a small pot. You will now need to place this water into a pot and allow it to simmer until there is about 1 teaspoon left of the liquid. Allow the solution to cool, and place it in a small bottle. Perfume made this way normally has a shelf life of about 1 month.

The report is pretty basic and might provide more info than what you’re looking for (like the history of perfume or setting up a business selling it), but it provides a great start if you want to delve into a perfume making hobby.

You can download the complete file here: How To Make Your Own Perfume [1] (pdf).

Home Remedy For Diaper Rash

Posted By TipNut On July 24, 2007 @ 12:59 pm In Beauty & Health | No Comments

In the sunburn remedies [1] post I mentioned a tip about boiling lettuce and using that water as treatment for relief.

This same remedy (boiled lettuce water) is a home treatment for diaper rash that was passed on to me, but requires just a few lettuce leaves:

* Boil a few washed & cleaned dark green lettuce leaves in water (amount to cover leaves) and boil for about 5 minutes.
* Strain the leaves and pour the water into a sterilized container. Allow to cool then apply to the diaper rash after each diaper change.
* The rash should show signs of healing the next day.

I know some poor burning bottoms don’t seem to respond to various creams and lotions, try this remedy to see if it helps.
