My next trip up is scheduled for the last few days of August/first few days of September. Don't know if that includes a Thursday or not (I don't have a calendar in front of me). Plus, I'll be traveling with a 75 year-old college professor (I'll let you guess whether he's older or younger than me ;>), so I'll have to arrange things around his schedule, but he has family in the Seattle area, so it might be flexible...

He was quoting a category of data from the annual Treasury report which defined your named amount as “actual customs receipts” as supplied by the Department of Treasury for the fiscal year 63-64.
Do you think that the $102 was total duties paid on imports for that year, or total customs collections on hand at the end of the fiscal year?
Regardless of what you think and “what others say”, the data is this:
In 1860, the South imported $346 million dollars worth of products. Of this list of goods, $240 million came from the Northern manufacturers and suppliers, and imported goods sold to the South was $106 million.

Did the United States have slavery before the Civil War? Wasn't the biggest slave port in Rhode Island? Weren't the Irish in Northern cities treated worse than slaves and considered to be lower than dogs? Do you think that the Northern states treated Negroes any better than in the South? I don't know what drugs had to do with the South. With the poor education in public schools, I shouldn't be surprised that you are confused. Other sources give the figure as $237 million total imported by the South in 1860 - $200 million from the North and $37 million from abroad. Regardless of what you claim.
The Statistical Abstract identifies it as customs revenue for the year.
