Here I have been burning it too for all those years and I had a bonanza but didn’t know it.

Smut is something I hate! But thought some of the others might at least get a laugh at what some people eat.

Years ago, whenever we would remove the tails from our sheep, we would take them to an Englishman who was a florist in town. They view lambstail soup as a delicacy - Even though I eat just about anything, it just never appealed to me.

Check out posts 1825 to 35, from my note, it appears they might be the inexpensive and easy recipes that I posted couple days ago, a couple really long/many recipe posts.

I over do the cheese and cracker, and prefer to have homemade break with it, but haven’t felt up to making it.

If you want something to perk it up, get a jar of the Mission Brand, Sliced Nacho Jalapeno Peppers.

For some reason, in the past I bought them and tried them out and almost ate the whole jar in a week, had good bread and even the juice was good on the bread.

I asked Scott for more and he says he can’t find them.

So who knows how long they have been on the shelf here, they are sweet and hot, but not gasping hot and with cheese, that is ‘good’.

And the peppers are good for you.

I have learned many things by helping someone else.

When I wanted to grow Orchids in the 1950’s there were only a couple books and lots of secrets with them, we did have a large Orchid Society and I kept asking questions, then someone said “come and help me this Saturday and I will show you”....I did and the word got out that I was a hard worker and they paid me in the bulbs of their plants and in a few years I had 3 greenhouses full of wonderful Orchids.

It also led to a job as the grower for an Orchid Nursery and Flower Shop, and I volunteered in the flower shop, went on to the college and could write Florist on my resume.

I was assistant show chairman, and when we moved, was the Vice President of the San Diego Orchid Society.

It wasn’t like a ladies flower club, it was so large and had important people in it, it was nothing for me to pick up a famous grower from England and take him to dinner, before he was to be our speaker for the evening.

LOL, I was never impressed with famous names, but I am so impressed with their secrets and knowledge of Orchids, both the history and growing of them.

No, I do not have any today, but once upon a time I did.

LOL, round about way to say it is a good idea to volunteer.

There are many storage food recipes in thread one, check around the 400 to 600 posts area and I will try to get more, if I ever quit clicking on “one more “ to see what it says and leaving too many open in the tabs.

I really wish I lived near one of you ladies. I sure could learn a lot! (And I need to if we are to survive the coming chaos.) Funny thing is that when I try to talk to my family about preparing, investing in something other than dollars, just in case — they treat me like I need medication.<<<

Get used to it, my family say that I am old fashioned and still talk like I was in Texas.

Do your thing, and store food, then when the day comes that your husband comes in, in the middle of the work day and says, “can you take me to the hospital, I think I am having a heart attack?” and it is 2 years before he can take the smallest of jobs, you will be thankful for every stored bite of food.

If I wanted to learn and was willing to make the effort to do so, I would check the college and community college for classes, but they go so slow.

If you are a church goer, ask your Minister who cans in your Church? Then go to them and ask them allow you to help and learn.

There are tricks to canning, that are not in the books.

Another source of information, is the State Farm Bureau, they have publications and our is Wellton had classes.

I would find the Mormon Temple and contact them, they will know and the Bishop will know who to send you to or have to contact you.

If you offer to work for the education, they will welcome you and I am sure you are a nice person, so don’t fear suggesting these moves for you.

Look on the internet for something along the line of:

Mormon groups in [your town or state].

The Mormons here had a ladies night for years, the ladies met, had worship, new ideas for foods were served and recipes shared and we split up and took classes, choose what is of interest.

I have taken sourdough and they shared a 125 year old sourdough starter with me from Alaska.

House cleaning, class by a couple of ladies who did it as a business.

Quilting, cooking, every week different.

I am not a Mormon, almost, but not quite.

I find them to be like a Freeper meeting would be if those of us on this thread had a pot luck, lots of hugging and support.

Look around for someone with a garden, by now you should know gardners and canners love to talk.....LOL

I was looking for something for my MIL at Lehman’s the other day. I found some grain mills there and was trying to decide if they were a good deal or not.

http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/search/searchresultsmain.jsp?fresh=1&searchType=advanced&iMainCat=0&iSubCat=0&attribute14=0&attribute15=0&attribute16=0&RS=1&keyword=grain+mill

I was thinking of a hand crank one. Any opinions?<<<<

Victoria Grain Mill
$44.95

My question is this:

On this grain mill from the above link, can I remove the handle part from the shaft and replace it with a pulley and then run this with a sewing machine motor and attach a belt to turn the pulley???

A small 12 volt motor would be fine, if you could charge the battery in the car.

If it hits hard and their is no electric, then put the hand crank back on and you will then have the best of both worlds.

I would start now looking for canning jars...

The sales for them were up 40% this past year - I sort of expect to see prices go up and supplies to go down this summer during the canning season.

Many times you can pick them up free if you start asking around, and yard/garage sales can also be productive sources as most people don’t know what they are good for. Just look for the Kerr, Ball or Golden Harvest ones, but do not buy any of the fancy old ones - with a wire bail to hold down a solid glass lid with a rubber gasket. They are not recommended as you cannot tell if what you can is really sealed and holding a vacuum. Just be sure you check for cracks and for any chips in the top rim as they will fail.

I would suggest hoarding dome lids and jars - You will find them priced all over the place. We have a Big Lots store that for the past several years have had pint jars for $6.50 a dozen - the same jars will be found for $12.95 at other stores. The lids can run from .99 at Big Lots for their sale to $2.49 at some other stores. If they are stored in a dry location, they are good for years before you use them. The bands are not a big problem, as they come with new jars and you can reuse them over and over.

From post 2093........

Executive Order: ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WHITE HOUSE OFFICE OF URBAN AFFAIRS<<<<

I needed my Lavender E.O. to read part of the above.

How very communist/al gore.

Get them to the cities and the elites will take over the rural areas for their fine living areas.

Let the peons live in cement cubicles, many stories high or a camp, but no more poor trashy grannies in the beautiful countryside.

Thanks for the link.

Was the first puller of the plow a man or woman?

It had to be human, before the animals were trained.

I do not know if it is covered in the bible.

>>>>Victoria Grain Mill
$44.95<<<<

The Victoria Mill is made in Colombia and is a good mill - for what it is designed for... I just bought one a couple of weeks ago and got it for $29.95 at a Gigante International Hispanic grocery store (run by a nice Chinese couple)

If you are wanting to make fine flour, the Victoria is not the one. It is designed for corn meal and does not grind fine enough for cakes, muffins or light breads or rolls. If you run it through 3 times, it will pass for a nice fine cracked wheat bread, but corn is what it is best for.

As for a motor, it turns too hard unless you put about a 24” pulley on it and minimum 1/4 Horsepower capacitor motor. Also, the shaft is a tapered tri-lobal or three sided affair which doesn’t work well with the round hole pulleys (the pulley would wobble and wear rapidly). In two weeks, I have tried it with hard red winter wheat, soft wheat, corn, popcorn, and even ground up my accumulation of egg shells to feed to the chickens (helps them strengthen shells) it did a fantastic job with the eggshells and corn, worked well with popcorn but was very hard turning. Wheats were medium hard turning (keep in mind that I am 6’2” 250# farmboy type, just to put things in perspective for you.

I have not tried the Family Grain Mill, but am considering it for flour (I currently use a blender). I liked the fact that it had an adapter for the KitchenAid mixer (but mine is only 250W and it has to be at least a 350 watt to use it)

Don’t know if that helps or not, but thought I would pass on my experience.

Granny, for my chickens, I crack corn with my chipper/shredder - I can do probably a ton per hour with it.

I think for physical strength reasons, it was more likely a man.

Or a group of men or women.

Yes!!!

Start with Free Cycle and then Craigs [sp?]

Also place an ad in the paper now, that you want to buy jars and pay attention, as I got a lot of ‘dropped’ apples and other leads on free or almost free food from the folks who had the jars and was not going to can in them.

My ad in the ad in the Portland paper was something like this,

Wanted canning jars and source of fruits or will take fallen fruit.

I got jar calls, but others called and wanted the fruit picked before it fell and a few had good buys on it.

I canned till I dropped and one night Bill had to finish it.
