On some modems you could tweak a register so that if you had call waiting it wouldn't drop carrier.

Ahh, yes, the tweaking-of-the-register. Are you sure you want to open that can of worms here?

I could have solved his problem if he had just apologized for his bad temper. I guess it wasn’t that important to him after all.

It comes down to, “Only one call can be on the line at once.” Even Oliver Douglas understood that, hanging from the top of his telephone pole.

there are line sharing devices. I simply had another phone line just for the modem...back in the day.

At this point I doubt he will believe anything we tell him.

lol...no, just saying it's been done. A long time ago I used to install software at restaurants that dialed into a database to submit food orders. I had to deal with this issue a number of times:

From Lose the carrier signal

If a modem can not hear it's carrier signal for a certain period of time then the modems will disconnect from each other. This sometimes can happen because of Call Waiting as the call waiting beep stops the carrier. If the phone lines are having problems then that will also cause this problem. One thing you can do that will sometimes help stop this from happening is to type in the following setting into the Extra Settings box in the modem properties window.

The way to stop this from happening is to type in the following setting into the Extra Settings box in the modem properties window.

S10=50

This setting will keep the modem connected for 5 seconds after it loses the carrier signal. The modem may be able to pick up the carrier signal again in that time. If the modems still keep disconnecting then you could try increasing the time. For example, if you wanted the modems to stay connected for 10 seconds then the setting would be -

S10=100.

The highest setting you can have is S10=254.

As I understand Vista is not really designed to be used with a modem.

Right, but I'm just suggesting that this could possibly be what's happening. If the S10 register is set too high then he could try lowering the timeout so that an incoming call would drop his carrier and the phone would ring.

Dialup sucks: I am on dialup and the only reason I’m not on Broadband is that they still have to upgrade our local exchange. That is one of the prices I pay for living in NZ: we have a third-world telephone system. It went straight to Hell shortly after privatization...

Say there FRiend, hope your weekend was good and this tech talk just reminded me of a burning question perhaps you can answer for all of us on this thread, being that you're down there in NZ, and to begin: we all know that it's one of the quirks of nature that when one is living in the southern hemisphere that the water in your toilet when flushed goes down in a clockwise direction, as opposed to living in the northern hemisphere where it flushes down in a counter-clockwise direction, right?

So here's the question:

Here in the northern hemisphere, the traditional phone produces a sound similar to "BRRRRRRRRINNNNG!" when receiving an incoming call, is it true that in the southern hemisphere, the sound is closer to "GNNNNNIRRRRRRRRRB"?

I think everyone would like to know about that. ;)

It is something very, very simple to fix and it doesn’t involve the OS.

Isn’t the line to the insulator used for the fire alarm call box to the fire department dispatch center?
